GAB's Silence on Mismatches is Shocking

The deafening silence of the Games and Amusements Board on continuing mismatches both in Thailand and in the Philippines which have apparently been approved by the boxing division headed by Dr. Nasser Cruz is causing concern among some promoters and managers who claim that a few individuals are being favored if not coddled.

The Filipino prospect AJ Banal's undefeated record shows he has dieted on Thai fighters, but of the 5 Thais he has beaten only one had more losses than wins (10-11-1). One was undefeated and even totted an impressive stoppage record (Sing Carryboy, 11-0, 9 KOs/TKO's), another had been beaten only once in six fights while the other two had records of 15-2 and 7-2-1.

    Banal stopped each one.

It seems that the traffic does not always fairly travel both ways. Or, Is the Banal experience the exception?

Hey there buddy, been a while huh ?

The last one Banal beat was supposedly the Mexican Superfly national champion, but the way he beat him (3 KDs in Round 1, I saw it on TV) can only mean two things: (1) That AJ is a legit bomber, or (2) Gaona was a patsy (which I doubt). Am not too sure but there are rumors Gaona was still shaking off jetlag before the fight, having come in just 2-3 days before fight night.

Heya, pal! Yeah, it's been a while... Good to see ya!

I heard about Banal's feat! Showed he's really "bazooka" it seems.

I think Banal is legit. He's the only fighter to ever take out Ali Rochmad (wonder what ever happened to Rochmad. He's reportedly stopped fighting after having been stopped by Banal). And, he's the only fighter to retire the heavy hitting Thai, Carryboy.

I know he went the distance with Rosas, but then, Rosas has always managed to go the distance in his three losses (out of 29 fights).

Gaona has had his share of fighting patsies in padding his record but, to me, it's par for the cours at this stage in his career. (Even Manny Pacquiao himself fought no less than 8 tomato cans in his first 20 fights, including two Koreans who were winless going in. Back in late '96, Pacquiao faced in succession, the Filipino Ipo Gala and the Korean, Sung-Yul Lee. The duo had a cumulative record of 1-13-1.)

It must be noted, however, that in losing to Sergio Espinoza in Vegas last year, Gaona did not look all that bad. Espinoza is the fighter who also beat Rosas by UD in a fashion that was more decisive than the manner that Banal defeated Rosas.

I am concerned, though, with Banal's next reported opponent. Jovanny Soto is a fighter who has lost to a fighter named Juan Jose Beltran who carried a 2-13-1 record. Soto had also lost 6 other times-- including UD losses to the above-mentioned Espinoza.

It's conceded that Soto has 20 KO's in his 25 wins, but, then, these were over fighters like Eduardo Guttierez who had won only once in 19 fights and was KO'd in 16 of those losses. (Guttierez is still active and still has to win again. His record now stands at 1-29).

In his last engagement, Soto stopped Ricardo Astorga who had a record of 0-6, and half of those losses were abbreviated fights.

Prior to meeting Astorga, Soto KO'd Francisco Reyes in the 7th round to win the Mexican SuperFly championship. Reyes had a record of 1-4-2. I dunno how Reyes earned the right to fight for a national title.

Anyhow, I think Rosas was a good opponent for Banal. I won't raise anything as yet over Esau and Soto. But if this goes on, some fans might raise more than eyebrows.

It's closing in on Xmas again, pal. Let me be the first to wish you Happy Xmas! Good to see you!

Edit: The Thai prospect, Sing Carryboy, has not been heard from after losing to Banal either. I dunno why he has been inactive for over a year.

            You're much too kind buddy!

Details are a habit with me I guess... Besides, like they say, "The devil is in the details." Ha! Ha! Ha!

As for Soto, I think he'll be turning in for the night rather early...

I dunno, but I think Banal should be made to face durable fighters in the type of Rosas so that he can put in the rounds. But who am I to say...

            Take it easy, pal. Catchya...
