Ali Ali Ali booma yeh :)

1)Which fight would you say ali looked his best psychically before his 3 year layoff?

2)Which fight would you say ali looked his best psychically after the 3 year layoff?

Answer to 1) : Hard to say but i would say either his fight versus Williams he looked big/ripped and strong or his fight versus Liston because he looked ripped.

Answer to 2) : Maybe the 2nd fight versus Norton in 1973 i believe.

i would like to hear from you guys

Answer to 1) : VS Cleveland Williams.

Answer to 2) : VS Foreman, he trained like a mad dog for that fight. His stamina and strength were high in that fight and his conditioning was unbelievable.

I agree, especially the second Norton fight. The Neil Leifer book on Ali has some great pictures and Ali and Norton both had great physiques for that fight. Norton in particular was down in weight and ripped. Quite an embarrassing difference from Peter-Toney .

I think you're pretty spot on.

        My opinions:

        1. Liston II or Cleveland Williams, though, in all honesty, he was in damn good shape for every fight after he won the title. He really took it seriously back then; many people wanted to see him lose and he would be damned if he gave 'em the pleasure.

        2. Foreman, without a doubt...though Norton II and Frazier II are close runner ups...maybe even Ellis.

Before the layoff it was williams, and after it was frazier II.

Prior to the lay off i think that Ali was always in great condition, which obviously wasn't the case towards the end of his career. His condition for the two fights were he was the supposed under dog was second to none IMO; that was V Liston 1 and V Foreman.

Pretty much any time in the late sixties. Against Chuvalo he was 214 1/2 pounds... and he looked rather trim. People try to play down the ability of a 60's Ali and state that he wasn't physically mature proven by his heavier weight post-layoff. Ali carried more BODY FAT post layoff but when he was training hard in the seventies eg. Norton II he dropped to 212 pounds even.... now thats lighter then he was against Chuvalo. His upper body musculature was no better after his layoff then it was before his exile. In the sixties he was in terrific shape, the man looked like a track athlete. At his best weight he was 212 pounds against Cleveland Williams and at his best weight post layoff he was 212 pounds against Ken Norton in the rematch.
