    Kid Norfolk's best wins

Tiger Flowers - Colored LHW champion, MW champion, defeated Greb for his title, everyone knows Tiger.

Joe Jeannette - x2 colored HW champion and ATG HW contender, Jeannette is well known for his wins and losses with the best of them.

Bill Tate - 1917 Colored HW champion, Dempsey's sparring partner. "Jack Dempsey had better stay away from Kid Norfolk, the coal black chattering sharpshooter that pasted Bill Tate all over the ring in the overture numbered Dempsey's Humiliation. From a neutral camp chair at the ringside it looked as though this Norfolk baby could pull the hidden ball trick on the champion in about five rounds and tag him 8-9-10 out!" Ring Larnder

Harry Greb - The Middleweight champion on everyone's ATG P4P lists. No one needs told who Greb is.

Lee Anderson - Colored MW title, Lee has some good wins but Norfolk is his best.

Jeff Clark - Panama HW title Jeff met Sam Langford, Harry Wills, Battling Levinsky, Dixie Kid, Peter Maher, Luther McCarty, Joe Jeannette, Sam McVea, Kid Norfolk and Jack Thompson numerous times and did very well. Stong claim for the Colored HW title having beaten Langford during one of his five reigns

Billy Miske - LHW title claim. Norfolk claimed the LHW worlds champion after beating Miske. Levinsky had defeated Miske a few months prior, 1917

Gunboat Smith ( Ed not Barbados) - Norfolk defeated two Gunboat Smiths, This Gunboat is the very good HW who never made it past contender status, well lineal contender. 1914 White HW champion

John Lester Johnson - The black man who licked Dempsey and still is not creditted for it. Lester Johnson has a few good wins but never to my knowledge earned even a colored title let alone a lineal contender spot.

Tom Cowler - Like Steven O'Donnell, Tom was a very good propsect discovered by Corbett. He faired better in England than America but was a serviceable contender all the same.

George Ashe - Another whose record is compiled from others. Ashe was very good, going into the Norfolk fight in 1917 Ashe is coming off a win over Panama Gans. A very good Gans. Ashe was a ***ish Russian. Making him one of the best ***s or Russians in HW history.

Battling Gahee - A very good HW underrated for his underperforming record. Before Battler sparred Dempsey he believed he was unhurtable and his conduct in the ring reflected that. The champion would teach him pain in one short sparring session. Gahee did well until Jack dropped him, propped him up, and dropped him again. A good HW, ruined by Champion Jack Dempsey. Even after, Battler was cautious not easy to KO.

Porky Dan Flynn - Decent HW contender who never did make it past contender status

Battling Siki - Siki was a good contender with good wins over HW at least good enough to get a Dempsey title fight.

Tut Jackson - Good HW of the era, not great.

Nat Dewey - Nat was a hard hitting HW with little skill but plenty of toughness and willingness to fight. A good HW of the era who was never able to step up to great

Rough-House Ware - Not much is known about him except for he fought all the best men of his era. His record is compiled from more well known boxers' records leaving us with only the results from his top competition. I assume he's one of those very good fighters who was never good enough to step up to great.

Arthur Pelkey - Drew Burns, defeated Luther McCarty for the White HW crown by KO that ended in McCarty's death. By the time Norfolk got to him he was a shell of himself.

It's a damn shame Norfolk doesn't get more ranking or attention. Never seen anyone claim he's bad. Never seen anyone not me claim anything about Norfolk at all.

Joe Ganses are next. Master Joe gets plenty of here and there remembering and even though there were many after I think Panama and Altentown(spelling?) Gans are both worth remembering.

The amazing thing about Norfolk is his first two years of boxing were full of losses and draws. I think he would have made a fine pick for title defense for Dempsey.

Two things about this stand out to me. One is the question, Did Norfolk have an amateur background before turning pro? Billy Conn never fought ad an amateur and had mixed results early in his career. Second, if you look at Norfolks losses he fought many of these fights only weeks if not days apart with many against much more experienced fighters.

          Just an observation.
