ThemApples fine thread got me thinking about Ellis. If you take Ellis and Ali, considering they both came from Louisville kentucky..that would make this city per capita a capital of boxing royalty.
And Ali was partially responsible for this, as his ascention into the ranks encouraged...
Ellis was a fine fighter. Probably would have been one of the better light heavys, but was, to his detriment able to be one of the best heavyweights for the time. Excellent mover, underrated puncher, smart, cagey, a testiment to how evil in the ring smokin Joe could be! lol.
How good a puncher was Jimmy? knocked down Bonavera who had a chin of cement. beat a lot of excellent fighters.
Ellis was initially succesful against Frazier, his ability to continue to stick and move was probably affected by a breathing issue caused by a broken nose. Yes, you all can call me a hypocrite! Does that mean he would have beat Frazier? prolly not. Frazier, a one armed fighter was so good that he compensated... Frazier's strenght being his relentless forward movement. I doubt Ellis could have kept Joe away.
Just a real well rounded, talented fighter. Excellent career, hell of a nice guy as well apparently.
