According to Ring the term Pound for Pound Champion was first attributed to Sugar Ray Robinson but it isn't until 1989 Ring introduced the first pound for pound ranking. The only retirement I dealt with post 89 was Joe in 08 and Manny is already the 08 Ring p4p so there's nothing to change.

I'm not sure Ring invented pound for pound rankings though.

Over 60 years ago, the term “pound-for-pound best” was coined for Sugar Ray Robinson as a means of recognizing his undeniable superiority in boxing. No matter how good the legendary welterweight and middleweight champion was, he could never win the heavyweight championship of the world so size was removed from the equation by virtue of a mythical accolade.

In 1989, Ring ****zine formally introduced a full top ten pound-for-pound list that would feature the best boxers from around the globe regardless of their respective weight classes. Now, it is literally impossible to be 100 percent accurate when compiling such a list and, for that reason, perhaps no other subject elicits more debate among lovers of the sweet science.

In all honesty, when I began I was just curious where it'd go, and originally I was just going to look up consensus p4p per eras for retirements. That proved more difficult than I anticipated so I put it on the back burner and pressed forward with what I could find super quick. Fighter of they year. Then that was disputable like right away so I went with fight and fighter of the year.

That said, the names you take issue with were not my choices, they are the men who beat the former p4p. I chose Ray after Marciano. I didn't even choose Rock, man who beat man did that for me. Ray lost, next guy lost, etc until Nino. I did not choose Nino, he won his way on to the list.

Emile is on this list because he beat Tiger, Nino beat Emile, that's how lineage works.(?)

I am still interested in a p4p lineage list that uses p4p consensus of an era during lineage retirement. I'll do that one when I've time, but, I'm not sure it'll change that pakr all the sense in the world to meart of the list given I am pretty sure Ray is going to come up consensus p4p of his era. From Ray man who beat the man dictates Nino gets listed bud.
I don't think it's an insult, only a question for clarity. I see where you're going, but I'm all honesty it takes a little deciphering. It's an interesting concept. I sometimes post thing that makes all the sense in the world to me, but need explanation. Is what it is.

        - -They was talking about Robby being the finest fighting man for his lbs as early as the 40s, prob around the first Lamotta fight.

Ring ain't the progenitor of the concept though no doubt they jumped on the concept.

Your lineal is just Your lineal. Just like the white and colored titles, must be dozens of lineal lineages. This ain't rocket science or brain surgery, it personal opinion and nothing more.

            Do you know who was?

            In either form.

If there is a man predating NP who in anyway carried the sentiment about him that if size was no issue he'd be the greatest in boxing I'd like to know of him please.

If there is another source that first used the term pound for pound as a ranking or title I'd like to know of that as well.

As to Ray - From my understanding for him it was more title-ish. Ray was the pound for pound, singular.

Was that during his career or in his retirement?

As to importance - I realize bud, dunno why people get upset with looking at history from different perspectives. I'd like to see other's lineal p4p lists

              - -I said Robby went back to the 40s, and now I'm saying it again.

P4p is just the latest variation of the finest fighting man for his lbs.

Their latest disaster being Teo vs Loma.
