    Willie Pep and Henry Armstrong

    Hi one and all!

This is my first ever thread so excuse me for any beginner errors. I apologise in advance and hopefully I'll get the hang of it.

I recently went through my top 5 'pound for pound' of all times list with some friends. I had Ray Robinson at the top of the pile with Harry Greb relatively close in second place. Muhammad Ali went in at 5th place which left me struggling to place Willie Pep and Henry Armstrong. I eventually went with Henry as third greatest of all time leaving Willie in 4th.

My question is who do you think was the 1) better boxer/fighter 2) who had the better career/resum? and 3) who would win in a fight between the two at 126?! (prime vs prime)

It's a ****in lame response but it really is just splitting hairs, not much in it at all.
Can't say who is the better boxer, they are the polar opposites style wise so it's almost impossible to say who the more skilled was, if they were to fight I'd have to give it too Armstrong, he'd get the better of Pep on the inside ala Saddler but more relentless, he's be all over Pep and be doing his best too not give Pep any room to do his thing for the full 15 rounds, he's also the naturally bigger man, big disadvantage for Pep given Armstrongs style.

I agree with all that my friend.

I think this is the best boxing dream match. Stylistically more than anything. Just look at these guys records also. These two are what boxing is about, well, was about!

      I've got Armstrong via SD15.

Armstrong is better and should be ranked higher than pep... Pep is a top 15 guy, Armstrong is a top 5 guy..

I would place armstrong even above greb. I have never heard pep refered to a top 15 guy though most people have him top 5

Robinson, ali, ezzard, greb, Armstrong, langford, leonard, duran, Louis, is the top tier of ATGs.. Pep IMO is on the next rung with guys like hagler, monzon, roy, pernell, floyd, chavez, Ross, walker, etc

                Very interesting.

I think pep is a top 5 guy for sure. He nearly died in a plane crash, broke his back badly and still came back to avenge a loss to the great Sandy Saddler! Sandy had like 100KO's in 130 fights or something. Saddler was one of the best ever. And although Pep lost two more times to Sandy, it goes to show how brilliant even a post prime Pep was.
