After he won the rematch against Spinks and regained the WBA title, Ali announced his retirement. He should have remained retired.

I agree with this answer. He would have avoided the two damaging losses to Berbick and Holmes.

If he had retired after SHavers he wouldn't have had the awful loss against Spinks, but then he also wouldn't have had the record breaking claim of 3-time heavyweight champion.

I'd still say after the second Spinks fight.

In handsight, after the Foreman win.

We would have missed Frazier III, but that fight was so damaging to both men.

In 1976, Ali's physician Ferdie Pacheco publicly revealed that Ali showed signs of brain damage, which probably means Pacheco had been aware of it for a long time.

I see no evidence to confirm that Ali wouldn't have ended up with Parkinson if he had retired earlier like after Rumble in the jungle.

After Foreman, the Frazier style match up was very damaging .He would have given Ali trouble in any year. Foreman had even stated he thought the 71 Frazier would defeat the 60's Ali easier .He started career in 60 no way should he have gone near near 75 ,took many punches in that time span ,mostly in sparring as Cus Damato warned Dundee he was going about Alis traing all wrong letting him take so many head shots when he came back in boxing .

Perhaps not, but the disease might have been delayed for several more years.

Not only because of the punches he took in Manila, but also from contenders such as Lyle, Norton, Young and confirmed hardhitter Shavers.
Besides all sparring rounds he went through during these years.

Couldn't have been good for his health.

Often crossed my mind. Which version of Ali was the better?
Had the more ring-wise version of '74 beaten the quicker, brilliant Ali of '67? ...
