Great Fighters with the Worst Demise?

So basically ,what fighters, who were truly great in their primes, had the slowest, most arduous decline?

Ali comes to mind instantly, as does Leonard, Mosley is still going but may be he isn't a true great. RJJ of course who should have retired a minimum of 10 years ago.

    Any others?

        Good shouts so far.

Ketchel and Greb dying so young. Roy Jones is sad to watch.

Roy jones by far had the worst demise..

He went from p4p #1 and heavy titlist to:

Coming down to 175 and going life and death with tarver
then getting stopped in 2 by tarver
then getting beaten up and stopped by glen johnson
then taking a long layoff only to comeback and get beat up by tarver..

It was such a dramatic fall from grace,, Roy jones seemed to be on top of the boxing world with the ruiz win, and looked to have major fights with tyson, holyfield, maybe lewis, but who would have thought that was going to be the last time we saw a victorious roy in all his glory

guys like tyson, louis, evander, all gradually went downhill while roy is was like he just went off a cliff instead of going downhill

In 25 years of boxing experience i have never seen a fighter fall from grace so fast..

Guys like prince naz, and tito, they just simply left the sport after their first loss, but roy hung around and basically got beat by an contender, and not just beat but usually badly beaten up or stopped...

Yeah I was gonna say Roy Jones too. He declined so much that past prime Hopkins, who he dominated in his prime, beat him by unanimous decision in a rematch a few years back. Joe Louis did pro wrestling? Did he work with any major stars of the time like Rogers, Gorgeous George, Tolos maybe? I heard Primo Carnera also turned to wrestling at some point as well. Apparently Louis and Robinson kept coming back because they really needed the money, with Louis being hounded by the IRS and Robinson not handling his money well. I saw that bio where Miles Davis finally had to tell him to stop fighting on HBO. I gotta go with Holyfield as well, even though he was in good shape, he looked pretty bad in the last few years in a good number of fights. The guy was almost 50 when he finally stopped. Anyone from the 1984 Olympics shouldn't even be recently retired, that's just crazy. Ali's decline was sad as well.

wouldn't consider him a great by any means but Kelly Pavlik is a perfect example of this

Yeah, Pavlik isn't great but he fell off so quick but it was a lot to do with his psychology condition and alcoholism.

A lot of the other fighters mentioned here were absolutely great but just stuck around. Someone mentioned Louis turning to wrestling SMH

If you throw pavlik in the discussion then you gotta have jermain taylor.. He went from young undefeated champ with wins over an ATG, but then two losses to pavlik, froch, abraham... He basically became a mini-roy jones with all those horrible ko losses...
