    Camacho Leonard

    What exactly went on here?..

    What I do know......

SRL was shot to pieces and hadn't fought for 6yrs, Camacho was pp but still very active 63-3-1..
Ray came in as challenger for something called the IBC mwt title..
There was little if any build up to the fight, apart from when Camacho did his ring walk dressed up like a toy soldier, while Leonard paced the ring looking like OJ Simpson on a mission.. Then came out right hand crazy, getting head butted, and punched to the floor in the process

    What I don't know....

Why did he comeback?... And why Camacho?... When there was a ton of much easier fights he could have taken.. Just his ego?.. Or were there other reasons?
Who was the suited and booted Donny Lalonde lookalike, seen with SRL just before, and after the fight?
How bad were Leonard's drug & alcohol problems in 97?... Enough to have made him totally delusional it seems.. Can remember him being interviewed in the ring afterwards, and with my eyes closed, he kinda sounded like Tyson

Money & perhaps ego. I guess he thought he come back after after a lengthy layoff again and beat a southpaw again. This time it was a southpaw that was once a lightweight fighting as a middleweight. The previous year Camacho fought an ancient Duran and did not look that good, that might have given Ray some confidence.

I gather that he was pretty serious about his comeback. He was inspired by Duran's performance against Camacho.....Duran felt that the judges didn't reward his bodywork justly.

To be fair, the Camacho who turned up for Leonard was rather better!

But Leonard was targeting Roy Jones jnr a couple of fights down the line. It looks crackers now but he felt that the sub par Norris performance was due to him making light middleweight and that a pudgy Macho Man was just an easy comeback fight against a well known name.

I don't think it was delusion due to substance abuse either; his worst ******* days were I gather around the time of the Bruce Finch fight through 1986, before the Hagler preparation. I read Leonard's biography last summer......but am a touch hazy on some of the details now.

From all accounts he was great in the gym, but blamed his performance on a calf injury which hampered his movement. To my eyes, his reactions looked slow, his accuracy poor, his workrate was far below that of Camacho......and for the first time......his once terrific chin wasn't there.

I don't remember the post fight interview; but over the last couple of years he appears to be in great health. His recent appearances on Jonathan Ross and Ringside indicate that he is not much less articulate as he was in his prime......he doesn't look much different either bless him!

I remember the calf-injury excuse, and I also remember him looking a lot more physically toned than Camacho.. Tbh, I thought Joe Cortez allowed Macho to get away with at least two deliberate butts in the 4th, that re-opened the scar tissue on his right eye, left from the original Hearns fight..
So it was the old nemesis Duran who inspired it all, but did Ray train himself? as I don't recall any training camps mentioned

If I remember right Angelo Dundee was against Leonard's return and wouldn't work his corner. Adrian Davis was the trainer.

On a side note I thought Duran deserved the decision over Camacho in their first bout.

          I looked this up,
Leonard was a commentator for the bout and it was then he decided wanted to fight Camacho.

I'll look that up. I don't recall Dundee having any role, though I gather he might have done some commentary/interviews for TV. I'm sure he was there at the fight. He fully expected Leonard to win.

I don't think Pepe Corea was on board either. I'll get back to you on these.....

A lot of poor decision making fueled by money and knowing Leonard, ego.

Davis worked with Hasim Rahman and his two sons Demetrious and Victor.
