"Needing no real introduction anywhere in the world"

Perhaps a ****** thread I'm making, but I've watched many classic fights where a fighter was billed as "needing no introduction anywhere in the world", or something similar.

The most recent fight I heard it for was an early 80s Larry Holmes fight; haven't heard it since. Does this say anything about boxing?

Yeah, that there are too few household names in the sport anymore, which I find kind of sad.

I believe the great Jimmy Lennon Sr. was the one who coined the phrase "really needing no introduction the world around" which he saved for the truly big names. There was no better ring announcer than Lennon Sr. and I felt lucky to have met him once.

How did he like doing the announcing in Rocky 3? Speaking of which, the last time I heard this term was for Apollo Creed. Holmes I guess would be the last real life example. But if the guy needs no introduction, why bother introducing him haha? That old gag. That would be funny though if a ring announcer said that and then followed up by not saying the boxer's name, whether he was fighting that night or not and leave the audience to figure it out and the commentators could still tell the people watching at home.

I met Lennon before Rocky 3 was even made. It was at the Ali-Inoki closed circuit telecast at the Olympic Auditorium. He was announcing for a live wrestling card that followed that awful Japanese fiasco. Lennon couldn't have been any nicer, telling us stories about boxers and wrestlers who he had met.

That was back when wrestling still knew how to put on good matches and tell decent stories. Did he have a favorite wrestler to watch or who he met? What did he have to say about Inoki?

Heard Bruno Sammartino went into the WWE Hall of Fame. Never thought I'd see THAT happen.

The "something similar" was uttered by Showtime's Jimmy Lennon, Jr. who - when introducing a certain fighter - always said: "From Catskills, NY, needing no introduction the world over, Mike Tyson! I havn't heard it since, and I don't know what it says about boxing, but it could say that there's no big-enough name in boxing today to need no introduction, Floyd Mayweather notwithstanding...

For me Johnny Addie is the best announcer with Lennon Sr. second and junior right there with him! The Buffer guy just wears me out and brought a carneval atmosphere to boxing that I don't like!!!

Addie had a great voice and style. He made the event seem very important. But the one thing I couldn't stand was that in a split decision, he would often announce the scores for the winner first. And that was a drama killer.
