The mention of Andy Holligan on another thread got me reminiscing. The 1990's was a great era of British Light Welters.
I'm not saying they were great fighters but there was a bunch of boxers throughout the decade who could box, **** or both.
Shea Neary 23(16)-2. Not quite the bastard he was shown to be in the Micky Ward movie but a decent fighter.
Ross Hale 29(18)-4. He was a binman if I remember rightly. I saw him on a bizzarre bill in Brixton back in 93. Kirkland Laing was the main event & Justin Fortune - the Aussie heavyweight who is now a trainer in the US, and he fought Lewis in his comeback bout - also fought. Gary Stretch had his final fight too. Good fighter but not the best whiskers.
Andy Holligan 27(19)-3. I liked Holligan. I thought he was going to be a world champ (not against Chavez though) but he didn't quite have what it takes.
Paul Scrap Iron Ryan 25(23)-3. What a character. Came out of prison & was a pro for only 6 years. Destroyed Ross Hale in a round & we all thought we had something special here but then got battered Jon Thaxton & then Holligan, both times in a round.
Tony Ekubia 21(17)-4. Tough fighter out of Manchester. Gave Holligan a good tussle.
Jason Rowland 26(14)-2. A West Ham boy with lovely skills. Another one I thought was going to go far but it didn't pan out.
Pat Barrett 37(28)-4. The punch he landed against Efrem Calamati was one of the best I've ever seen. Impeccable timing.
I'm sure there's others that have slipped my mind. Top fighters & most of them fought each other too, with a variety of results.
