Please teach me about Sean O'Grady

O'Grady built up an extremely impressive record against highly dubious competition, mostly in Oklahoma. His sleazy father was his manager and promoter. It was said more than once that Sean fought the same illegal immigrant two or three times under different names. When it came time to pay, his father (Pat O'Grady) would have them deported to Mexico.
But Sean could really fight. They made their first move with him when he was 18. He went to LA to fight Little Red Lopez, who outclassed him in four rounds. Lopez did say that O'Grady was talented, especially for an 18 y/o. O'Grady improved and took the lightweight title impressively from a pretty good Kronk fighter named Hilmer Kinty. Unfortunately Sean's idiot father got the title stripped from him for not fighting a mandatory. His career went downhill pretty fast after that. O'Grady had good hands but he bleed easily and probably burned out early due to so many fights as a teenager.
O'Grady was popular doing the commentary for the USA boxing series, but I haven't heard him in quite awhile.

Scott pretty much had it covered. O'Grady's best years were as a lightweight were he obtained a title shot against Jim Watt in Scotland were he did very well. The fight was stopped on cuts but there were claims of head butts being the cause. It wasn't too long before O'Grady had another shot against the Kronk's first champion Kenty where in a great fight he won the WBA title.
An early story that comes to mind with O'Grady who was very prone to cuts:
During an early fight Sean suffered a bad cut during a match and his father Pat wanted him to stay away for the rest of the round and let the cornermen do their work, so Pat O'Grady yelled NO, NO, NO. With the noise of the crowd Sean thought his father was yelling Go, Go, Go so he went crazy on his opponent knocking him out in the process. After his father yelled at him and Sean explained what he thought his father was yelling.
Other tidbits from memory,
Sean once explained he once was hit so hard during a fight that for a moment he thought he was sitting at home with his wife watching tv til he realized he was in the ring fighting.
And Pat O'Grady once started his own boxing organization called the WAA. Sean who was stripped by the WBA was the first lightweight champion and a midwest heavyweight named Monte Masters was the heavyweight champ. The organization faded quickly as Sean lost his title in his first defence to puncher Andy Ganigan.
After the USA network sadly quit doing boxing, Sean worked for Fight Time on FOX and briefly for Showtime. But as mentioned most of us remember his years on USA Tuesday Night Fights.Last edited by TBear; 10-15-2011, 12:40 AM.
