Doug Dewitt Vs Tony Thornton Sudden Death 13th round You never see this anymore

Fight is declared a draw after 12 rounds and goes into a sudden death winner takes all 13th round.. you dont see these types of fights or fighters on ESPN anymore

I was thinking about that fight the other day and remember it well. I thought Thornton won after 12 on my card but he was very tired the last two rounds. He got ripped off because it shouldn't have been a draw. So they used a new rule(that strangely disappeared after this fight) and insisted the fighters fight one more round. The announcer had Thornton up by 1 round the end so a round going the toher way doesnt sound far fetched to me

At the time it did to everyone but DeWitt's camp as they would get a second chance to win it after losing the first., I even remember an article in Ring supporting this as well.
Thornton won by one round(two on my score card) and was exhausted. Making him get back on his gloves and go another round that he'd obviously lose seemed fishy.

I feel you but one or two rounds is a close fight nda the way Dewitt finishes the chapionship rounds he deserved the fight

Well it is all past now and the record book stands. It doesn't matter to me really, I was just sharing how it seemed to someone that was following boxing at the time and watched the fight that night. At the time the fight was scheduled for 12, and the late Tony Thornton won the twelve round decision. Crazy to change it to 13 so Dewitt could win. As I mentioned the rule was soon changed. I don't remember another time it was used.

But it is just a discussion now and both fighter had there moments in their careers and got their shots so it is no big deal, so I was just sharing.

Thanks for sharing... It really was a unique situation.. The ammoumcer said he saw it at the other ESPN title fihts.. But I think they should change this rule back

I once did a thread entitled 'The 13th round' and it got a good response.. I did then, and still do think it's a good idea.. ATG's have all got one thing in common, and that's the condition in which they step into the ring. The best fighters train themselves up to such a level, that it doesn't matter how long the fight lasts or even how much bigger the opponent may be.. In this case Thornton looked bigger, but wasn't in the same fighting condition as DeWitt. Game fella was Doug, and i'm by no means suggesting he's an ATG but had he been able to **** a bit harder, just may have been.

Had to lol at the ref in that fight, probably an ex HW?.. Every time he went in to seperate them, there was almost a total eclipse of both fighters...
