    Why does POVERTY MAKE FIGHTERS?

I was reading a Sugar Ray Robinson book the other day, and the author states that it's usually the broke men who are inside of the ring. Anyone want to take a crack at why it's usually the poor who are psychologically fit to be fighters?

Pretty simple. It's an individual sport (all on you, no teammates necessary), looking for a way out of a harsh environment (which makes you tougher and more determined), and a nothing-to-lose attitude. Also less distractions, which in this day and age are rampant for those with even a moderate income. Inner city gyms also have a long history of development at this point and tend to be among the best.

Poverty hardens and gives determination. When you have nothing in life you become determined to hang on and fight for every little scrap that is yours. This carries over into the ring as in life.

When I saw this thread topic I immediately thought of your post in the thread about heart and determination.

IMO the two go hand and hand and I agree with what you have said above. That hits the nail on the head.

Yea, his post about heart and determination was my inspiration for starting this thread.

I read once that a lot of people that end up achieving some sort of greatness in their life have an inferiority complex. People that feel they have something to prove to people and themselfs go the extra mile. Adversity is a type of nuture but it can break people or make people.

Perhaps hunger more than poverty. The desire to get out and make it is not always easy to come by. Boxing has always been a way.
