James`Buster`Douglas was not a one hit wonder

Buster Douglas often referred to as a `One-hit-wonder`for his beating of Mike Tyson, he then almost gently succumb to Evander Holyfield in his first defence of the title..Yet Douglas was far better than many think, watching his fights leading up to his world title fight with Tyson Douglas was a `Force to be reckoned with` He had hammered Oliver McCall knocking him around like a rag-doll, beaten Greg Page, Tex Cobb, Trevor Berbick and got robbed of the decision against Jesse Ferguson, but it was the McCall fight in particular that showed Douglas was no push-over and would be a difficult fight for any heavyweight when he was fit & focused... Douglas could blow hot & cold as he showed against Holyfield & Tucker but on his best night he was a hell of a fighter.

Absolutely! Buster had world class speed, power, combinations, mobility and technique.

Its such a shame that his focus and preparation didn't always reflect his talent.

Douglas's heart was never into boxing, he wanted to be a basketball player, but that didnt work out for him, which is why he drifted into boxing. Its the reasons his performances are so up and down, because he had the talent, but never really the will. When he did have the will he put on some great performances, like Douglas-Tyson.

In order to get a shot at Tyson, Buster had to give King options for future fights and accept a purse of 1m to fight Tyson. After the Tyson fight King tried to get him stripped, which led to him and King falling out. Douglas tried to have his contract with King nulled, while accepting the Holyfield fight. King would take him to court which dragged into the time which Douglas supposed to use for preparing for Holyfield. King also tried to turn the blacks in his area against Douglas, claiming that he had deserted poor King for the whites. To Douglas's shock even his own father would side with King.

Douglas paid King 4m to settle the case, but by that time it was already to late for him to prepare properly for Holyfiled. His heart and mind simply wasnt in it anymore, as shown in his performance.

Considering that Tyson is ten million times more famous and significant than Trevor Berbick, and that the Tyson victory pretty much eclipses all his other wins...yeah he's a one-hit wonder. Lots of natural ability but that doesn't really change how his career actually went. Nothing wrong with that, though. He was a helluva lot better than Kevin McBride, that's for sure.

Douglas was damn good, but it's no one's fault but his own he didn't live up to the best of his ability every night.

I don't know about him beating McCall like a ragdoll. From memory that fight was on the Tyson-Williams undercard probably as chief support. I think that fight was sloppy, boring and dull. I'm not even sure if Douglas managed to get a overwhelming decision. In fact I think the fight was pretty close.

I also remember thinking that Douglas would be easily KTFO by Tyson which was enforced after Tyson annihilated the highly respected Williams in some 90 seconds.

Going through Douglas record on boxrec I don't see any impressive wins besides Tyson. I don't call myself an expert since I haven't seen that much of Douglas pre-Tyson, but for my money he was a one-hit wonder. But I think it's safe to say that he is one of heavyweight historys great underacheivers.
