I think Johnson would have to come in at 197-200lbs to beat Louis.
oooooo wow what a big difference
you cant be serious to think louis would bomb out a good defender like johnson...i think louis is the better more active fighter and would win by decision...

I think a prime Jack Johnson at 193lbs would be to small against a 205lb Joe Louis.A 12lb difference would make a big difference with Johnson's style of fighting.I think he needs to come in at 200lbs to have a chance of beating Joe Louis.
Louis's combinations are too much for Johnson to deal with. He was very good at avoiding and parrying single shots, and could control smaller opponents in the clinches, but he never fought anyone who hit as hard and accurate as Louis in combinations. His best chance would be to rough Louis up in close.
something tyson said about johnson was interesting he was sayin that the way johnson blocks punches would'nt work in modern boxing because more than 1 or 2 shots are thrown at a time
for this reason i think louis who was one of the greatest punches boxing has ever seen would've beaten him
the fact that johnson only ever fought white fighters has to be considered also
You know nothing of Jack Johnson young man, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You do know that Jack Johnson offered to train Joe Louis before the Schmelling fight right? Joe Louis turned him down. Jack Johnson then proceeded to explain how and why Joe would lose that fight, and everything that Jack said came into fruition word for word. He picked all this up from watching a couple of fights and seeing him work out in the gym. Jack Johnson would've played with Joe Louis for the entire fight much like he did Tommy Burns. I suggest you read up and watch whatever film you can get your hands on before commenting on such a serious subject as this one, young fella.

Jack Johnson also predicted that Louis would lose to Jack Sharkey and a bunch of other opponents. He got one right, but it doesn't mean he had Louis's number. Louis predicted perfectly how Frazier would beat Ali, doesn't mean he beats Ali.
Johnson being adept at picking off one or two punches, but unproven against great combination punchers, is true. The films are there, the likes of Burns, Ketchel, Jeffries, Flynn, Moran threw single shots most of which Johnson picked off. Mike Tyson does know a bit about boxing.

mostly agreed, but assuming jj is allowed to fight his fight, louis would have a hard time getting his punches in early on. johnson wouldn't have to avoid more than a shot or two at a time. i think he makes it a fight until louis' bombs catch up with him late.

True Great he may have gotten the Sharkey fight wrong(that might've been sour g****s on Jack's part, we don't know), but I find it very hard to believe that Joe would've been able to get past the ring savy of Jack, not to mention Jack was a helluva puncher in his own right, and could take a punch just as well. Joe used a parring jab to get in and set up his combos he didn't just go balls to the wall, like some sort of brawling swarmer(ala Jack Dempsey). It is at this point I believe that Jack would throw over hand rights and turn or tie Joe up. This would frustrate Joe, and if Joe would've gotten frustrated in the same ring as Jack that would've been all she wrote for him. Sam McVea was a murderous puncher probably more so than Joe was and using that as a berometer I would say that Jack could handle the power of a Joe Louis. Thoughts?????

Johnson was a good puncher but not in Louis's class for power. Louis was one of the best punchers ever at heavyweight, the films show this. McVea was physically very strong, but certainly not as fast and accurate with his punches as Louis. Johnson was very good at dealing with the likes of McVea, who looked for single shots, often telegraphed. Louis was no brawler, but he got many of his opponents out of there early and went for the finish when needed to, and he was arguably the best finisher of all time. His combinations were impossible to stop when he had his man hurt, and Louis could certainly hurt Johnson, who never had a great chin although it was difficult to get to him because of his cautious approach.
Louis never truly got frustrated, he took his time and remained a threat in the late rounds. Even his expression hardly ever changed. Johnson would not be able to clown with Louis as he could with middleweight-sized Tommy Burns and an old Jeffries. He would have to take the fight seriously which he rarely did. Whether his best effort would be enough to win, it's difficult to say. I'd say that Louis dealt with more men who were comparable to Johnson than Johnson did with men who were comparable to Louis. There weren't many combination punchers with the power of Louis around the heavyweight division in the early 1900's. Johnson took on young versions of McVea, Langford and Jeannette, but refused to grant them rematches as they got more experienced. The films of Jack Johnson against Jeffries, Flynn and Ketchel don't show much compared to all the films of Joe Louis.
