Was he inconsistant though? I mean I take your point concerning dominance, Jones was more dominant, he dropped very few rounds during his best years, never mind fights. But in 1936, for example, he fought McLarnin and Ambers, going 1-3. 1-3 isn't that special, but then both of these guys belong in any top 50 all time and were both at or near their best. Jones fought exactly no top 50 men at or near their best. In 33 he matched Kid Chocolate, Barney Ross, Frankie Click, the year before Petrolle, Berg, Chocolate; basically, if you weigh your rankings in favour of dominance over quality to that degree, you will end up with Calzaghe ranked over Jones!

Im on board with this, Canzoneri simply beat more, and of better quality opponents. If Jones had more quality opponents around he may very well have ranked ahead of Canzoneri, but we don't give points for could have's, only for fights fought. I would expect a lot of disagreement on this though.

Thats right, and you can see where I rank him on my all time list. Of course there are other factors to take into consideration, but you aren't here to discuss boxing so I won't even bother.
