Quarry had some pretty damn good wins. He had no great wins. He had 5 opportunities at a great win, and lost each time. Pile on his other losses to that + his robbery of a past it Floyd Patterson, and his career really isn't that special.

To claim it was his skin colour which made him a favourite is incorrect, its his performances against Frazier, Lyle, Mathis, Foster, Spencer, Shavers and many more which make him a fan favourite.
Michael Moorer was just as an exciting Heavyweight and was a better Heavyweight, yet doesn't nearly hold the same kind of aura Quarry holds. That aside, excitement has nothing to do with this. A guy isn't great because he's exciting. His lifestyle also doesn't make him great.

The problem is Quarry is rated in the greatness department by most plebs just as high as he rates in the popularity department. Quite frankly there's a big difference between how popular the man was and how good he was. It's exactly on the same level of discrepancy as Arturo Gatti. While people today are pretty realistic about how good Gatti actually was, come back in 40 years and watch his talents get romanticized as well.

i don't see a lot of people rating cuevas that highly. he's regarded as someone you probably don't want to stand and trade with. i think that's fair considering the damage he did to some guys. he was to punching what gatti was to willpower.
