In 1984 Moore spoke about the Duran fight and his future.
Moore claimed that the experience factor had nothing to do with him losing and it was all down to Duran thumbing him in eye. Moore also claimed he may not have been at his 100% best due to having oral surgery before the fight due to getting his teeth knocked out in sparring.
Moore said if he were to meet Duran again he would beat him. Moore claimed now a days Duran just fights on knowhow, and not the hunger he fought when he was a Lightweight.
Moore even claimed after Duran had defeated him, he was still a finsihed fighter.
Moore claimed two weeks before the fight he was sparring with Terry Crowley. He got caught with a right hand and heard his teeth crack and it started to hurt. Moore claimed it was a freak accident and he had his mouth piece in.
Moore went the dentist and found out that his teeth were fractured and they would have to come out. Moore said this was all happening a week prior to the fight. Moore claimed he was in surgery for 5 hours and was back in training just two days later.
Moore also said why he was bleeding so much in the fight, was due to Duran hitting him with a uppercut in the first round, and they broke the caps which were plastic. From there on, Moore said he felt from then on the fight slipping away.
Moore said Duran thumbed him intentionally, and said he almost read his mind, saying it was like he did it so slow and pressed it and pushed it. Moore said from there on the fight went out the window.
Moore claimed that Duran knew that he cound't beat him straight up, he also said Duran was a master at thumbing.
Moore said Duran was probaly the strongest puncher he'd face up until that point. Moore also claimed he really wants a Duran rematch.
Going into the fight, Moore said he had never been stopped or even knocked down amateur or pro, and felt embrassed with his performance against Duran.
Moore then said Duran is only borrowing the title for the time being and he is just letting Duran hold it for a little while before he gets it back.
He also spoke about Mike McCalllum not being able to take pressure, saying he's a girl. Saying as long as McCallum's on top that he's not fighting anybody.
He said Fred Hutchings was a good fighter and hungry due to not earning no money.
He said Mugabi was a good puncher, but it takes a smart boxer to beat him. Saying those African guys ain't that smart. He then said he's all one way and who would want to stay there and trade with him.
He said Hearns was a good fighter and seems like he's getting his head together now. Moore then said that Hearns thinks he can knock everybody out. He's got a really good jab, and right hand. Hearns I thinks is ok.
He's the best of the lot and Moore says Hearns will beat Duran.Last edited by JFBH_162; 02-09-2010, 03:23 PM.

Davey Moore was a great offensive fighter who could have probably KO'd many more experienced and accomplished fighters in 154 lb history, but he was in there against a man who was also a great offensive fighter but defensively adept on top of it in Duran. Moore lacked defense and it was always going to be exposed by a more experienced, better defensive fighter who could match him for strength.

Not sure about the thumbing incident, but if Duran did thumb him then Moore's right about him being a 'master' at it.. There was considerable in-fighting during the bout, and it wouldn't be unheard of for the laces to come into play, but i'm not sure about a deliberate thumb.. Duran was winning the fight comfortably, and to my memory, mainly capitalized on the mouth injury which had bled throughout most of the fight..
He certainly wasn't under any pressure to cheat, so i doubt if it's true..
For Moore to say that Duran was the strongest puncher he'd faced is a good summing up really.. It says volumes about Moore's inexperience at the time.. Duran wasn't a devastating puncher at 154, but simply schooled the younger fighter..
Moore virtually confirms this, when he says that Duran was fighting on knowhow as opposed to hunger..
My conclusion is, Moore was a rookie champ with a lot of talent who made the mistake of fighting an ATG while carrying an injury.. All depending on how he recovered and came back (mentally) would have been the deciding factor on whether he could have beaten Duran, but he was spot-****-on about Hearns..

Surely, if a man's just had his front teeth taken out and put back in, he'd need to take time out from a job that predominantly involves being punched in the face.. Surely, as champion, he had every right to do that.. I've never understood fighters who get involved in heavy sparring sessions just a few days b4 a title fight either.. Why take that risk, when there's so much at stake?

Gary Guiden was also a notable puncher that Moore fought with 35 KO's in 39 wins. Guiden was coming off a 4th round KO win over Sean Mannion who took Mike McCallum the 15 round distance.
Neither of these men had any trouble hitting Moore who was open defensively. Moore could take a punch exceptionally well though. I'm a bit surprised that he'd say Duran was the hardest puncher he fought despite his obvious dislike towards Duran.

Interestingly Weir fought many of the same men that Tony Ayala Jr. fought and for the most part finished the common opponents off in more impressive fashion than Ayala did. At the end of his career he KO'd Manning Galloway the long-reigning WBO welterweight champ.

I'm surprised the Duran apologists's haven't entered this thread to besmirch the memory of Davey Moore.Reading that interview will upset many Duran apologists as Moore confirms Duran's illegal tactics. The average Duran apologist glorifies his disgusting, dirty antics inside the ring, nevermind that it's illegal and can seriously harm his opponent.
The thumbing incident occured very early on in the fight,It gave Duran the opening that he needed to punish a talented, but very green Davey Moore
