De La Hoya vs Gatti

WTF exactly was the point of this fight? Did anyone actually think Gatti would compete at all?

I have heard somewhere that it was HBO's reward to Gatti for his exciting fights, a payday vs Oscar.

But was there any hype or anticipation? You know, Golden Boy vs Most exciting fighter? Or did everyone just know it was gonna be target practice for Oscar?

Gatti just took it for the money.Oscar took it because he needed a easier touch after Trinidad and Mosley.

Ther ewas hype but most people knew Oscar was the heavy favorite.

Yeah, it was a rebound for Oscar and a payday for Arturo. Pretty brutal though, I would have stopped it after the end of round 4, so many of Gatti's fights were just hopeless battles where he was badly overmatched and just taking an unneccessary beating.

I laughed pretty hard when it showed 15% of viewers scored round 2 for Gatti, he even reeled back at the bell and was clearly getting the **** punched out of him, and some people thought he had won the round.

That was reallyu the time I really started hating De la hoya, that was one of the worst mismatches I'd ever seen and I was ashamed of Hoya. He was 5 inches taller looking like he was beating a kid that tried to steal his bike. And Oscar had his damn trunks pulled to his ******* lol lol lol. Gatti was a soldier, in a street fight I heard he really threw them thangs lol. I miss the guy

Yeah it was embarassing at times with Oscar slipping several shots in a row, choosing when to let his hands go...and doing damage everytime he did.

This was basically the equivalent of Mayweather - Marquez. I give huge amounts of credit to Gatti for this fight though. He was on the way back up after his three losses in a row, basically fighting bums at junior welterweight, then goes ahead and moves up to 147 to fight a premier fighter.

And unlike Marquez, he landed a couple good ones. Gatti truly was one of boxing's greatest gifts.

For me this is one of Gatti's fight where he show how big a heart he has.

Gatti was in a tough spot as a fighter. He could box fairly well, but not well enough to outbox guys like Oscar, Floyd, or any other really top line technical fighters.

So his chance to make serious money and gain notoriety was to abandon any boxing and put his ass on the line in wild brawls. Unfortunately though this led to some terrible beatings.

Gatti was also lucky he fought in an era of increased safety and earlier stoppages when the fighter had clearly had enough. Back in the day, refs would sometimes let you get floored 6 or 7 times and wouldn't stop it until you were either a half conscious mess or counted out. With Gatti's balls he would have never quit and taken some even worse beatings that probably could have cost him his faculties like sight and hearing or even his life.
