    Historical Middleweight Tournament

Following on from the Hagler/Hopkins and "Anti-Pac/May" threads...

Using the format of the current Super Six, who wins out of a historial version featuring:

    Marvin Hagler,
    Bernard Hopkins,
    Carlos Monzon,
    James Toney,
    Mike McCallum,
    Roy Jones Jr

Describe how each fight plays out and ultimately who wins the tournament?

    The stages are as follows:

    Stage 1:
    Hagler vs Hopkins
    McCallum vs Jones
    Toney vs Monzon

    Stage 2:
    Monzon vs Jones
    McCallum vs Hopkins
    Toney vs Hagler

    Stage 3:
    Hagler vs Jones
    McCallum vs Monzon
    Hopkins vs Toney

Assume these fighters are all in their prime, with no weight issues etc.

I'll post the same analysis that I did in NSB:

    Stage 1:

    Hagler vs Hopkins
They're both too tough and have too great chins to be knocked out. I see Hagler winning via decision.

    McCallum vs Jones
Jones via decision. If he couldn't knock McCallum out at the end of his career, he isn't going to in his prime.

    Toney vs Monzon
Close fight but I think Monzon would start out slow and progress to handle Toney a decision loss.

    Stage 2:

    Monzon vs Jones
Jones just be too quick and too fast for Monzon. Wouldn't have enough power to knock him out, though. Jones via close decision.

    McCallum vs Hopkins
I'd take Hopkins via decision, in a close fight.

    Toney vs Hagler
Close one but I'd pick Hagler via decision. Toney was great but Hagler would take the upper hand in a rough fight.

    Stage 3:

    Hagler vs Jones
As great as Jones was at middleweight, I see Hagler winning a very close fight, at this part of the tournement.

    McCallum vs Monzon
Very interesting fight. I think I'd have to choose Monzon via a razor close decision.

    Hopkins vs Toney
Hopkins would have a lot of trouble against Toney but I think he'd manage to pull out a decision.

Scorecards at the end of the first round

    Hagler - 6 points
    Jones - 4 points
    Hopkins - 4 points
    Monzon - 2 points
    McCallum - 0 points
    Toney - 0 points

    Semi-Finals

    Hagler vs Monzon
This would be a truly great fight. I wish it happened but Hagler rose to fame too late. I see it being a very close fight with Hagler being able to pull out a victory. It would be a rough, for sure.

    Jones vs Hopkins
The fight already happened early in their careers. Some say it was a green Hopkins but, even so, I think the outcome would be the same with any version of a middleweight Hopkins. Jones wins via decision.

    Finals

    Hagler vs Jones
A rematch of their fight in the first round of the tournament. This time, I think Jones would be able to get the victory, in another close fight.

The one thing I learned about a prime Jones was that he was able to adapt to the situation. Just look at how he adapted in the first Tarver fight and the rematch against Montell Griffin.

    Jones via decision.

    Champion and winner: Roy Jones

      I'll post my reply too:

      Excellent thread! Good analysis!

I'm not sure I could agree with Toney and McCallum losing all of their bouts, but with the competition this good, it would near impossible to call all of the bouts!!

The fighters are all so damn tough it's hard to see any KOs.

What a tournament it would be.

Roy Jones would win the tournement.. i dont see Hagler winning a fight, IMO he loses decisions to all contestants, with all fights going the distance from start to finish of the competition

I really enjoyed Boxerca's post. I'd call some of the bouts differently, but I actually would agree with a fair few.

I too would have Roy Jones the eventual winner.
