Prime Tyson was a beast. But he still would have lost to any great fighter who could withstand his early assault and was not intimidated. If he had the psyche of a Marciano, Frazier or Ali.....he may have been unstoppable. Unfortunately he didn't. Still one of my favorites to watch though.
I like Tyson, I never bought into the theory he was unbeatable at his peak but he was a hell of a good fighter. Always think he stop developing when he was not the finished article, he could have learnt to fight better on the inside for example.
To his credit he bought a lot of people into the sport and whatever his mistakes he showed the dignity of a champion when he was on the slide, apart from the odd arm break and ear bite obviously.
I've been through this discussion so many times I notice it gets longer and longer each time with the my response and then the length of time for the response posts...so, I'll just add something else:
I think he was the best under 6'0 HW Champion in history at his peak. Better than both Frazier and Marciano. If you had those three to pick from and had to put them up against the best HW Champions and top fighters/contenders throughout history and up to now...I would take a peak Tyson over them.

Prime Tyson was an excellent fighter who won many of his fights before the bell rang through sheer intimidation. That would not have worked against strong willed men like Ali, Frazier or Louis. He would have been a bad style matchup vs Foreman(Foreman was too big and hit too hard), but he would have definitely beaten fighters like Patterson, Ellis, Schmeling, Baer, Braddock, Norton and Sharkey. Borderline top 10 All-Time Heavyweight and without a doubt deserves induction into the IBHOF once eligible.
Great young fighter but I think most of the top 10 beat him because once his early storm is weathered he goes from a great fighter to a good one with a big punch.
His style can be spoiled as well (watch the James Smith fight) exciting though and with the right mental frame he could have gone on to be much better.
I have little doubt that if Cus had lived he would have gone on to dominate for many more years.
