This is from a book I have about Muhammad Ali that describes a problem he had in training for a while:
"During one training session, Ali revealed to reporters that he had been having trouble with his hands for over a year. He had not hit the punch bag before either the Chuvalo fight or the Patterson fight the previous year.
'The hardest thing I hit for those fights was my opponents. I just had to stop punching the bag. I had a lot of pain. My hands were bleeding after every training session.'
He showed the scarred knuckles that had caused the problem, but said it had now been straightened out.
Dundee added, 'We've kept it a secret, but it's been a worrying time.'
