Chuck Gardner is quite possibly the worst fighter Bruno ever fought and that takes some doing.

Believe it or not but Gardner actually once scored a win over Jimmy Young. He also beat the giant Mike White.

Trust me if Terry Lawless thought he was a danger he wouldn't have been there. Just to think that fight and beating an ancient Bugner got him a shot against Tyson!

Well, he certainly did not look like a threat in the video I posted above. Seemed 50 years old and looked like he hadn't been in the gym for years. Not exactly in professional fighting shape.

I know Bugner was old and overweight but he was on a pretty good streak of wins at the time, having beaten Greg Page, David Bey and James Tillis back-to-back.

They were all pretty much names/"opponents" by this stage though really GreatA?
The fact that they dug up Tillis to fight Bruno a year or two after his Bugner defeat kind of puts things into perspective.
I was just pleased that Joe Louis and Jack Dempsey had passed away by then!

Tillis was pretty good at that point of his career, when he fought Bugner that is. He had seemingly improved his stamina, having gone to a 6-4 type of a decision with a young Mike Tyson. The Bugner loss sent him back and by the time he fought Bruno he was pretty much used up although he did fight Evander Holyfield later.

Page got upset by journeyman Mark Wills but he came back from that with two wins over Jerry Halstead and James Broad. Two years before he had held a world title. Solid win for an old Bugner.

I know Joe, and if he wasn't such a genuinely nice natured person, he'd have made big waves in the HW division for a very long time!

I'd have to agree with that. I always found it humorous that when Bugner fought in a rage, he started knocking people out with ease.

Watch the Winston Allen fight I posted above, where Bugner gets headbutted and instantly knocks Allen out with a right hand. I believe the pre-fight hype for the Richard Dunn fight got a bit ugly and Bugner responded by knocking Dunn out in one.

Although I haven't yet watched the Allen fight (well, not for at least 20 years or so) I'll stick my neck out, and say it wasn't a headbutt, he actually bit Bugners shoulder! Wonder if the young Mike Tyson was watching that one lol...

Wouldn't argue with that he had all the tools for sure.
But by the time he signed with Frank Warren (Winston Allen onwards?) his future was behind him so to speak.
