You can make a good argument for him being in the top 10.

Ironic that you cry about others for discrediting fighters and yet you do the exact same thing. What do you base these claims off of idiot?

And where did you hear this Malone? I was listening to an interview Leonard conducted a month ago and he said that the one fighter who he does keep in contact with is Thomas Hearns, and claimed that he just got of the phone with Hearns prior to that interview he conducted.

You sure he wasn't being sarcastic?

I know they do a lot of promo work together but it took years to get them both to the negotiating table, this was solely because of Hearns's reluctance to have any part of Leonard.. It was also while Hearns was still active, so I suspect he may have mellowed with age a bit.. They may coin it in together, but it dosn't mean to say they're buddy's..

A little like Mayweather is today, Leonard was accused of cherrypicking his opponents. That's true at least as far as his career post Howard is concerned. Hagler was kept waiting and Leonard kept on teasing the public by talking about the fight for then to shoot it down afterwards in a very egoistical way.

Following Hagler, Leonard began his cherrypicking by fighting Lalonde and old foes Hearns and Duran instead of the real threats of the repective divisions (i.e. Nunn, Hill).

This is by no means in an attempt to take something away from Leonard, but is only my take on why Leonard perhaps wasn't as popular.

Bert dosen't have him in his top 10, Bert ranks him number #25 in his 100 greatest fighters list.

Very true.. The likes of DLH, Chavez and even Norris put him to shame when it comes to not fighting all comers.. Maybe not Hill, but Nunn, Jackson, Mugabe, McCallum, Kalamby, Barkley are just some of the names he missed out on..
I suppose we have to make allowances for the eye surgery though.. After which he only went for rich pickings only.. Being smart may have made him a wealthy man, but in doing so he may have sacrificed his top 10 spot.. I don't blame him really, better to have your facalties at the end of the day..

Another reason why he may be disliked, is because of the way the boxing authority's pampered to his demands.. The Super middleweight division was created, virtually on his say so, so that he could be the 1st man to win 5 weight titles.. They also let him keep his SMW title while he popped up to LH and beat Lalonde.. I'm sure this put a few noses out of joint, especially Hearns who did it very soon afterwards, a matter of days I think.

Considering Ray Leonard was asked the question and answered it without breaking into a fit of giggles, then yes he most certainly did say he enjoys a good friendship with Thomas Hearns and that he speaks to him quite regularly on the phone.

Translation - Ray Leonard was one of the very few boxers who crossed over into the mainstream, who all the kids looked up to and admired and this is what made the bitter old boxing bully boys mad and upset.

Ray Leonard was good for boxing and by no means came up the easy way in boxing in regards to who he fought and beat.He fought literally every style of opponent in route to EARNING a title shot.

                    I think Hagler beat him.

but regardless, he's in the top 10 IMO.

While chuckling over a million bucks each for a 2 minute commercial I expect.. But maybe they have burried the hatchet, as did Joe Bugner and Henry Cooper recently..
