The reality of Greb vs Tunney

Greb beat him 3 times out of 5, drew 1 and lost the last one.

The decisions you see on boxrec are NOT official decisions. They are newspaper decisions because Greb was a newspaper fighter. Huge venues and events were saved for special occasions. It’s likely Greb had upwards of 400+ fights because not all fights were even officially documented.

When Greb beat Tunney, its the press that gets together and forms a verdict. The newspapers would vary all the time. In all of the Greb fights, if you read the outcomes it just sounds like a replay of the first fight, he throws too much and overwhelms Tunney, who can’t do much but land a body shot here and there. The newspapers not aligned with Tunney would say this. There was many a time when Greb would get his hand raised in the ring and go home and read he lost in the newspaper.

In the last bout, Greb has so many injuries, a missing eye - busted ribs and arms - head trauma from car accidents. He knew he was gonna die soon anyways. The man lived very fast. What’s crazy though is he wasn’t a hard drinking man and he did manage to leave 250k in todays money to his daughter.

In his best year he made 950,000 dollars in todays money by fighting so many times (40+).

So why did they rob Greb?

Because they wanted the talented and good looking Tunney to square off vs the hard bruising handsome heavyweight Dempsey. It was a Hollywood attraction. They didn’t want a 5’8 middleweight as heavyweight champion of the world. It’s clear he was better than both.

It was what it was. The crys of foul came mainly from the bias Pittsburg/Cleveland newspapers and Maldoon of the NYSAC.

Tunney outclassed Greb. Greb got the initial win but Tunney figured him out after that; Tunney grew better, the 300 fight worn Greb was fading.

Greb didn't think he was going to die. He was getting his cataracts removed. The operation wasn't a big deal, anesthesia was always a risk pre-war.

Come on man. He wasn't that crippled. Hyperbole. He was 300 wars in and Flowers got him at the right time. Beating him twice.

Flowers himself suffered from an eye injury as well, but still took two decisions.

Everything I've ever read, witnesses to Greb and Tunney, old men when I was young; it all lines up with what you've posted here.

Lets just use common sense too. Tunney is much bigger, we all know what they about a good bigger man beating a good smaller man. Somehow the idea where little guys beat HW greats didn't actually translate into the era's where fights were recorded on video, not just on newspaper clippings.

Don't mind OP. He just got a little over-excited finding out about the Greb legacy of old newspaper hyperbole.

This is just so much ****. Greb had no idea he would die on the operating table.

Tunney wasn't even ranked until their last fight1925, and he beat the piss out of Harry in that one.

This is what I am saying. This simply isnt true. Its a narrative built to secure a big fight between Tunney and dempsey. Ive read a whole assortment if the NWS descriptions of the fight, and it totally doesnt sound like Tunney won these bouts.
