Archie Moore vs Prime Roy Jones at LHW

Roy Jones for me. I love Archie but I'd struggle to pick any other light heavyweight in history over a prime Jones, and that includes Carpentier, Tunney, Conn, Spinks, Foster or Moorer.

Before someone comes on and says Jones has a dreadful chin and would get knocked out, honestly his ability to absorb a punch only dwindled after his drop down from heavyweight (two weight divisions!) to light heavy. I just think he is too damn fast, tricky and slippery.

Qawi was tough for any opponent to deal with, but I trust Roy's superior movement and speed would win him the fight.

Yeah, it could do, you have a point, but i favour Quawi more as he has that crouching style which would cause Roy problems, aswell as defensivly being one of the best imo, Roy has never had the best of chins either, and Quawis chin is granite. 15 round fight i defintly favour Quawi, 12 round, i call it 55/45 in Quawis favour

wow, bit shocked roy beats everyone but a prime McCullum, who was a very good fighter in his prime, but still dont think he would beat a prime jones even in his prime, and can name lots of more fighters who stand a chance beating jones!

As fond as I am of Roy I would favor Moore, Foster, Tunney, and especially Charles over Jones.

Well, we really don't know because Roy was rarely caught cleanly before then. I've seen it suggested by columnists in Ring ****zine that his chin was always suspect and it took having his reflexes erode to have that exposed. Lou De Valle was hardly a big puncher and he dropped Roy during his prime.

Its not long ago that I watched the Del Valle fight, good southpaw left hand. Roy was up rapidly, his legs were not jelly and he just tied his man up. I never saw anything prior to Tarver 2 that indicated to me that he had a suspect chin at all, he took some good whacks from Toney, Williams, Griffin, Ruiz (at heavy).........not even staggered! I dont know who these collumnist s are, but I'll be impressed if anyone can venture video evidence of Jone's chin being suspect before Tarver 2, It even seemed to hold up fairly well in Tarver 1. I wouldn't have said that Moore's or Foster's chins were exactly cast iron.

There is a You tube video going around that demonstrates that Roy's chin was more than up to the task....down once in something like 12 years as a pro, so rarely staggered I can barely think of one. I've watched the pound for pound greats of all time extensively and I've got a feeling that Roy might have been the most tallented.

Plus the fact that he was very rarely caught is.........for me more of a testiment to his tallent than anything. His resume gets a bashing, a little too much in my mind, but conclusive wins over elite fighters like Hopkins, Toney and Griffin give me no reason to doubt his ability.

I love all the other guys I've mentioned but hand on heart I think Jones beats them, though maybe not conclusively.

Although in his prime due to his cat like reflexes Jones never got hit consistanly, but as this video shows when he did get hit, he seemed not to dazzled. I feel there is no dout after draining his body to get back down to 175 along with his age, this lowered his punch resistance. But not many big punchers hit Roy clean on the button.

He also did fight Gerald McClellan as a amature, and was not dropped. Though only a amature bout, still pretty impressive as McClellan was a pretty big puncher even in the amature.
