    Sonny Liston vs George Forman

    In sparring an old Sonny Liston was the only fighter to ever back up George Forman.Forman admits this himself.

    Forman also said Sonny Liston was the only man he was ever afraid of.Forman said that after there sparring and sitting beside Liston and talking to him,he was afraid of him.

    Of course this was a young George Forman.....But it was an old Sonny Liston also.

    I will break down this fight,but first of all I want to say Liston had more heart.Don't give me that crap that he quit against Ali in there 1st fight.Roberto Duran had as much heart as any fighter who ever fought and quit against SRL. Liston and Duran both quit for the same reason.They were both getting humiliated and embarresed,and beat with no hope of winning.

    Early in his career Liston was fighting a veteren fighter(Marty Marshall) and had his jaw broke in a early round.He did not quit, and fought on till the end where he was hitting Marshall so hard he stepped out of the ring!

    What are your thoughts on this fight?

    young George was only like 209 lbs, strong as hell, but prime for prime, Liston wouldn't back him up.

      I've heard and read a lot about their sparring sessions, & it's fair to say, there was a great deal of respect between the 2.. I've been guilty in the past of saying that Liston lacked heart, but mainly because of the 2nd Ali fight, where it looked to me as if Liston could'a got back up, but I wasn't the one who got hit, & I can only speculate.. I genuinely believe he injured his shoulder in the 1st fight, desperately trying to KO Ali.. He tried alright! & so did Foreman..
      Against one another, it's easy, it's whoever connects first.. The hard part is whose it gonna be.. If you take the mutual respect thing on board, you can make a point that it won't be early.. Liston would probably keep Foreman at bay with his enormous reach & piston like jab, for the first few rounds, but Foreman would still keep plodding forward, using his edge in strength to eat a few jabs while looking for an opening.. Liston, wouldn't have much choice apart from the back foot, which he wouldn't be comfortable with.. For sure George is gonna get badly marked in this one, & may touch down if Listons right cross comes into it, but I'd say he has the better chin & it's never been broke b4, so around the 10th Liston's gonna be the more tired.. Although Liston's ahead on points, Foreman's gonna throw that left uppercut.. It's a punch that no one can take..Foreman by KO sometime between 10 & 15.. Foreman also in need of hospital treatment..

        Sonny Liston had a good chance to survive the prime 1973 Foreman's early onslaught and come on strong in the final rounds to steal a close decision. Its not a fight I'd bet on though.

        That said I do rate George Foreman higher in my ATG heavyweight list. I personally dont think that we ever saw the true PRIME of Foreman. I'd fancy that the early eighties (when George would be what 31-33 years old) would strike a fine balance between the young wrecking machine that gassed late and the patient, calculating, well paced veteran in his second incarnation who lets face it was a touch too heavy and slow. Imagine a disciplined, patient 235 pound Foreman in his early 30s..........now that guy would beat Liston in my opinion. Its fun to summise!

        We'd have seen superfights with Tyson and Holmes too had Foreman been around circa 1980-1986. I doubt Tate, Weaver, Dokes, Coetzee, Page, Tubbs, Thomas or Witherspoon would have beaten him like Young did.

              Emmmm... But does Foremans strength sap Listons stamina?
