One Welterweight that would rule them all...

Well, it's obviously Robinson. He fought in a time of stunning welter competition and beat everyone. Hence, the reason he is P4P the greatest. There are a number of others also. Napoles was definitely one of them who is often not spoken of. Amazing welter who would have given anyone trouble. Hearns is, of course, another who would be a big problem for anyone in any era.

Leonard is also up there. He was a big welter with great skills, good power and a load of fighting heart. Would give anyone a run as well.

I think the welter and lightweight divisions are the greatest divisions with the most talent of any other. Lightweight I think even more so than welter. The amount of great fighters that has always been in the lightweight division is absurd. I guess because it is the most common size and has the perfect balance of speed, power, skill and stamina. I've always thought those two divisions have had the greatest fighters of all time in them.

The older generation looks at Ray Robinson the same way they look at Joe Louis.Unbeatable.But the same way I imagine some modern day heavyweights destroying Louis, I can imagine the modern day welterweights(some) beating Ray.I've watched the tapes of Robinson and he was a beast.But I've never seen him fight someone with his same talent level.I honestly don't see him beating Hearns in his prime.Hearns had a very good jab and maybe the best right hand ever at welterweight.I see Ray getting caught in round 7 or 8 by that big right hand.A fight with Robinson and Ray Leonard would be a CLASSIC!But again,Leonard is a man that would match him with speed and skill.It would be like looking in a mirror.But Leonard in his prime was a beast too.If these guys fought 10 times,Leonard wins 6 of them.I see Duran in his prime at welterweight giving Robinson HELL.He was very hard to hit and could hit hard.Maybe he doesn't get the win, but it would be highly competitive.

Someone had mentioned a Robinson Vs. Hearns matchup. I think it's compelling but only if Tommy doesn't try and play the "Hit Man" and go after Robinson: Fighters who tried that sort of thing on Ray got destroyed. If Hearns uses his jab and moves like he was capable of then things get interesting. With a significant reach advantage and a superior jab when he wanted to use it Hearns could give Robinson fits for much of the fight, sufficiently so to make the outcome very much in doubt if it made it to the cards. My bet in this scenerio is Ray catches Tommy late in similar fashion to the way Leonard did, probably after bringing Hearns' guard down with body punches.

I agree with this, Hearns would certainly be competitive with him. Some people underrate Hearns based on his KO losses. Hearns was winning the Leonard fight and Leonard had no choice but to dig down deep and war with him. It was also rumored Hearns over trained for that fight and went on a 5 mile run on fight day (maybe he was nervous or something?), no idea if its true or not. Great win by Leonard and he gets all the credit but its not like if they fought five times Leonard would be 5-0 in the series. Hearns would be very competitive, especially if he kept moving and boxing and not trying to trade. I think he certainly would outbox Ray Robinson from the outside with his reach, speed and jab and it would be up to Robinson to chase him down and get inside like Leonard did. I would pick Robinson to do so as well and stop him like as Leonard did, but its not like I would pick him to be 5-0 in a 5 fight series either.

Probably because you have little imaination and can't see past 1980 with your hindsight. Maybe you've never seen him fight someone with the same talent level because THERE NEVER HAS BEEN someone with the same talent level as Robinson. Hearns himself was certainly not unbeatable at Welterweight as his loss to Leonard proves. Leonard certainly didn't get wacked out in 7 or 8 by "that big right hand" and Robinson's chin at very least was equal to Leonard's.
