    Archie Moore vs Jimmy Bivins

Highly skilled battle between two great fighters. This was the last of their five fights.

Archie Moore vs Oakland Billy Smith I

Here's a fight between Archie Moore and Oakland Billy Smith from 1946:

Oakland Billy Smith is mostly known for being the opponent of Charley Burley in the only film that is available of him.

How the hell did you acquire them in the first place?

Sorry for the double post, but it's amazing to me how much better Archie Moore's reaction times are then in his fight with Joey Maxim. Moore had never OVERLY impressed me, but not he has. His reaction time is perfect. It's not super fast and he's not really a fast guy, but his defense has the perfect timing for sliping most shots. As he slowed down, he ate more shots, but it was a very good style for his prime.

              It also amazes me that:

              A. How much better Moore is at Light Heavy compared to Heavyweight.

              B. How the **** Moore-Oakland Billy Smith was a draw based off those highlights. Smith was game, but he wasn't landing much imo.

That being said, Charley Burley looked like a much better fighter against Smith then Moore did.

** That Embrel Davidson clip is priceless. I've come to the point where I expect another trick, another sleight of the hand, another winning streak, and yet there I am swooning over the ol mongoose again. Embrel was a solid heavy and a heck of a load.

I couldn't make sense of the Smith tape, so I'll try again on another browser. Any slice of the historical record with Arch is brilliant stuff.

If you're taking requests, I put in for Liston/Dejohn, or anything Dejohn. I keep hearing his praises from time to time.

Now, if you've got a genie that conjures this stuff up, I won't hold my breath, but oh to see Wills/Firpo and Wills/Sharkey.

And how's about Gorilla Jones? He's a hofer now, yet little is known about him because he was primarily a midwestern fighter.

                Thanks again. Just brilliant.

Aggression was very important during those days. Moore fought defensively and seemingly outboxed and outlanded Smith but I guess he wasn't aggressive enough to get the decision.

Of course what probably played the biggest part in Moore not winning the decision was the fact that the fight was held in Oakland Billy Smith's hometown... Moore beat Billy Smith three times in rematches.

Moore always carried a lot of extra weight as a heavyweight, fighting at 190-200 lbs, a weight he was still somewhat natural at, but when making the LHW limit he always put himself through intense training to get himself down to 175 lbs which also improved his conditioning by a lot.
