Boxing Books

Do any of you avidly read, or collect, books about greats of the past? If so what are your favorites?

Personally I'll read anything regarding any of the greats or anything about the history of the sport. I'm currently reading Being Sugar Ray: The Life of Sugar Ray Robinson, America's Greatest Boxer And First Celebrity Athlete by Kenneth Shropshire & A Flame of Pure Fire: Jack Dempsey and the Roaring '20s by Roger Kahn.

One a sidenote, back in March I went to an estate sale and I found two rare boxing books - The Michigan Assassin by Nat Fleischer (circa 1946) and a leather bound edition of JACK DEMPSEY, The Idol of Fistiana also by Fleischer. I snatched them up, but it wasn't until a little later than I learned they were pretty rare.

Check out Fear & Fire : The Inside Story Of Mike Tyson by Jose Torres, I thought it was a very good book.

i found this book in a secondhand store one time for about 8 bucks, called the History Of Boxing. it was from about 1987 or so, so it ended with mike tython, but started with the bareknuckle days and john l sullivan. it has bios and pics of some of the great old fighters, like harry greb, the greatest - joe louis, stanley ketchel, dempsey, jj jeffries, tony zale, etc. i love that book

"In This Corner...!" Forty World Champions Tell Their Stories. From 1973. This book is awesome!

"BOXING" the 20th century. This one covers the years 1900-1992 and was published by RING ****zine. 350 large pages. Pretty good book that covers all the top fights of each year and gives profiles of each great champion.

I have a few books. Mainly about the history of boxing of the history of the heavyweight division. The best one lists every single heavyweight title fight but it only goes up to 1987. (Might be the one mentioned by Dr.Filth above)
It also list title fights in other weight division where the title changed hands.

Have a few books about Rubin Carter as well. Really good reads whether you believe he was innocent or not.

Does anyone know where I can get another boxing book listing all the heavyweight title fights in history and profiles of all the champions up to the current champions. I've looked in plenty of bookshops in the u.k but can't find any.

Have seen one book can't remember what it's called but it's just about heavyweight's and profiles hundreds of them with their record and how many title fights they had etc. Includes every champion and challenger you can think of and possible some that never even challenged for the title.

P.S. Anyone know of any DVD's regarding the history of the heavyweight title.

Johnny Tapias book is really good, also the book Lennox is great it follows him through his fights with Rahman.

As for Hurricane I've got a fair number of books about him and was intrigued by the whole thing until I learned how he treats the people that worked so tirelessly to free him. Kinda skews a perspective abit.

Hopefully the website for my wife's store will be complete fairly shortly. I plan on talking her into featuring boxing books just like we do in the store. I dare say we have the largest selection of boxing books in the entire state LOL

Cheers Hawk I think I've seen that before not quite sure though. Do you know if it lists every title fight at heavweight, and if so when does it go up to.

If my memory serves me correctly I don't think it does, it mentions them all during the articles about each fighter but doesn't actually list them all in order of when they happened. I've only ever found one boxing book to do this and it goes upto Tyson v Tucker I think. It's called the illustrated history of boxing by Harry Mullen and features Ray Leonard vs Marvin Hagler on the front. It has some fantastic pictures in it and it's really informative.
Definately the best boxing book I've read.
