Terry, God that's awful. I still ove Earnie Shaver's quote that he "would not drive through Philly if he Knew Roy was there." I just posted that photo above on my site. I've been looking for one of Roy for years. Thanks for the info.

BTW, I suspect you could Ali in that mix.

Roy thought the fight had been stopped, turned around and raised his hands in victory but when he turned back to see a determined Shavers still standing. The Tiger's spirit visibly sagged. Still, he came on and hit Shavers with blows that would surely have knocked out anybody else. Then, all of a sudden, Shavers started to connect with some medium hard blows to Roy's body which slowed him down. Suddenly he connected with one of his deadly uppercuts with Tiger on the ropes and it straightened him up. He was now hurt and Ernie sensed it. He moved the Tiger into a corner and began throwing his own bombs. Roy could not withstand the ferocious onslaught and the Referee now gave him a standing eight, incredibly the second in the round! Ernie stood poised, albeit exhausted, and ready to go. As the referee ordered Roy to begin fighting, he took a step forward, hesitated, and then collapsed in the corner a beaten man. Ernie sagged over the ropes too tired to celebrate. The fight was over. That was some 10th round!

      EARNIE SHAVERS VS ROY WILLIAMS

I've been looking for this fight for awhile.

This is as great a finish as you're going to see in a fight.

I've never been a fan of the standing 8 count in the pro game. This time it cost Williams a TKO win. Shavers was done.

      Hi Yogi BTW.

Thanks for searching, finding and posting the video. Watching that, and knowing Shavers's problem with stamina, was very impressive. I can't help but wonder how past heavyweights such as Walcott, Charles, Baer, Patterson, etc would have handled him if he fought like that...
Sorry to say, we'll never know.

Roy vs John Tate would have been a great fight.Tate would probably win, but Roy would scare the Bejesus out of him.

            Dynamite,

There was something about Big John Tate that I always liked, but I can't put my finger on it. It's a shame that his chin gave out later on like it did, and it's really sad how he ruined and ultimately cut short, his life.

That being said, if they ever fought in their primes, it would be a fight I would have loved to have watched. I would be tempted to bet on Williams.

The ninth round of the Roy "Tiger" Williams- Earnie Shavers fight on December 11, 1976 saw a big change both ways (but it was the 10th that was memorable). The Tiger started strong in the ninth and landed a number of solid shots He seemed in charge but then tired midway though the round and Ernie came on, bombing away and Roy had to hold on and regroup. With about a minute to go, it happened. Roy snapped off one of the hardest left hooks I have ever seen and staggered Earnie who was now in big trouble. Ernie had no answer and likely was saved by the bell. He staggered back to his corner a very tired boxer.

Shavers vs Williams was a borefest i read the same as you and i watched the full fight and it was pretty boring Shavers was pressing the action and Williams hardly done anything.

I tried to contact Roy in Las Vegas last year, but was unable to. Are you sure he is in prison?
That was nowhere near one of the great rounds it was goodish at best.
