O-Kay,
Here's my take on this fight that SABBATH was so cool to post for us:
First of all, Ali, while bigger than he should have been, was not in horrendous shape and still moved pretty well. However, Jimmy Young's style mixed with Ali's like oil and water...they didn't. Young is one of the few fighters I've ever seen that actually made Ali look "awkward" from time to time. Young was effective with his counter-punching, especially when he had Ali in the unfamiliar role as aggressor; and his accuracey combined with the way he made Ali miss, caused several rounds to be up for grabs, depending upon what you were looking for.
Now, all of that being said, Young's negative style, ultimately proved detrimental to his quest to win the World Heavyweight Championship from a Living Legend IMO and only a Jimmy Young fan could have conceivably scored this fight for him. I mean, really...you'd have to be savoring over every quirky move he made, every pitty-pat shoe-shine to the body to score this fight for Young. I will admit that there were several rounds that I had to make notations next to because they were that close; but in the end, while Young's performance was commendable, it wasn't "champion-esque", so to speak. And ONLY, let me say this again, ONLY if you are looking for a way to give this fight to Jimmy Young, can you do so, IMO. Judging it objectively, watching the action, the give-and-take, the dictation of the pace, the ring generalship, effective aggressiveness, defense, etc, you have to give it to Ali.
Jimmy, I believe, might have landed more clean punches, so he actually might have had the higher number had punch-stat been around then; but punch-stat don't win championships.
Final Tally: 144-141 for the winner and still Champion: Muhammad Ali.
Thanks again SABBATH.
