With Matchroom Boxing plotting a busy start to 2025 in the UK alone, with up to five shows being staged on British soil in the first three months of the year, former world junior welterweight king Josh Taylor is expected to be among those in a starring role.

The 33-year-old’s career has lost momentum in recent years, with a highly contentious points victory over Jack Catterall in February 2022 his most recent win. One would have to go back even further to his May 2021 triumph over Jose Ramirez for evidence of the Scottish southpaw at his best.

In his last two bouts, the 19-2 (13 KOs) Taylor was outpointed by Teofimo Lopez in June 2023 and then lost the rematch to Catterall over 12 rounds in April.

Promoter Eddie Hearn told BoxingScene that Montana Love, Sergey Lipinets and Robbie Davies Jnr are all potential opponents for Taylor as he looks to regain his mojo. But Hearn is keen to do what’s right for Taylor at a crucial stage of his career.

“It’s difficult, Josh is coming off the Catterall defeat, so, you’d quite like to have a good fight and get a win and get momentum,” Hearn said.

“It’s tallying up whether you want that kind of fight, for the show, and tallying up what he needs for his career. You can’t just sling him in.

“We understand our obligation to bring fighters through at the right speed.”
