WBA interim-light heavyweight champ Dmitry Bivol (10-0, 8 KOs) is getting ready for his scheduled fight against Cedric "L.O.W." Agnew (29-2, 15 KOs). The fight is scheduled for ten rounds.
The bout takes place on June 17th at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The event is headlined by the HBO Pay-Per-View rematch between Andre "S.O.G." Ward and Sergey "Krusher" Kovalev, who battle for the WBO, WBA and IBF light heavyweight world titles.
"He is an experienced fighter and is well-skilled defensively. The Kovalev and Ward rematch is the most important fight in the light heavyweight division right now and I am honored to be part of such an event. I am very motivated and excited about this fight and I am anxious to showcase my skills in the mecca of boxing of Las Vegas, USA live on one of the top boxing networks of HBO Pay-Per-View," Bivol said.
At the moment there are three WBA champions at 175-pounds. The super champion at the weight is Andre Ward, while Nathan Cleverly holds the WBA "regular" title at the weight. Bivol is the mandatory challenger to Cleverly.
Cleverly (30-3, 16 KOs) has been inactive since capturing the regular belt from Juergen Braehmer last October in Germany. The sanctioning body has not yet ordered him to face Bivol.
Bivol is managed by Vadim Kornilov and promoted by Andrei Ryabinsky of World of Boxing. The boxer may soon start working with Main Events on the American side of the scope.
Kornilov says his boxer would like to get his shot at Cleverly, but they are not fixated on this option. They are willing to fight everyone.
"We are not fixated on whether or not we will be able to fight for the WBA title. After the fight with (Samuel) Clarkson, new opportunities have come up for Bivol, and on June 17 he will fight on HBO pay-per-view. Of course we would like to fight for the full WBA title, but otherwise we are still open for other options in general. We are not overly fixated on the WBA belt. Bivol has already announced himself [in the division] without becoming a world champion," Kornilov said to Basil Konov.
