The main event featured Brooklyn's own Sechew Powell (13-0) vs George Armenta (12-3)of Silver Springs, Michigan. Powell resides in the tough Brownsville section of Brooklyn that has produced boxers such as Mike Tyson, Riddick Bowe and Shannon Briggs to name a few. They say if you can make it in New York you can make it anywhere and you can multiply that by ten for Brownsville. This writer knows from personal experience.
The main event was the most competitive match of the night. Powell scored an unanimous decision over Armenta, outboxing his aggressive opponent. Powell fought most of the fight backing up and fighting off the ropes. Powell was a very effective counter puncher against the orthodox Armenta. Armenta never stopped coming and did score some effective straight right hands. During the fight, Lou Dibella, Powell's promoter was screaming for Powell to get off the ropes and told me that it gets him nervous when Sechew lays on the ropes.
On the undercard lightweight Kobu Gogoladze (16-0) defeated Murtze Logan (14-10-2) in a unanimous 8 round decision. In a scheduled 8 round Jr. Welterweight fight Edgar Santana (12-2) scored a second round TKO over Rodney Freeman (5-3). Young Jaidon Codrington (3-0) scored an impressive 1st round TKO over Joe Harris (6-5) in a super middleweight fight.
Cruiserweight Ehinomen "Hino" Ehkhamenor (7-0) was impressive during his 2nd round TKO win over Charles Brown. I feel "Hino" will move up to Heavyweight within a year or two.
Another Brownsville fighter Curtis Stevens scored a 1st round TKO over Henny "Put Up Your" Dukes. It was Stevens pro debut and should be Duke's last fight. Sometimes you really have to question why some fighters enter the ring.
I am looking forward to Lou Dibella's next "Broadway Boxing" fight card at the Manhattan Center. There is not a bad seat in the house and you never know who you might be sitting next to. Who knows, you might find yourself sitting next to Donald Stump. Sorry, I mean Trump.
