Former six division champion, and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, Oscar De La Hoya, has no problem with the recent surge of exhibition fights.
Last month on pay-per-view, from Staples Center in Los Angeles, two of the most talked about boxing fights of 2020 took place.
In the main event, 54-year-old former undisputed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson returned to the ring and fought 51-year-old former four division champion Roy Jones to an draw in their eight round exhibition clash.
In the co-feature, Youtube star Jake Paul brutally knocked out NBA veteran Nate Robinson.
The event easily generated the biggest pay-per-view buyrate of the year, with over 1.5 million purchases, and De La Hoya was not surprised.
“It was entertainment,” De La Hoya said about Tyson's return to Bloomberg.
“I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that, for the first time in a long time, fans and people were congregating to watch an event. Mike Tyson is such an inspiration, he got in good shape and looked good.”
And regarding Jake Paul, De La Hoya believes the outspoken social media influencer is creating a lot of attention for the sport.
“We’re appreciative of a Jake Paul who is a boxer now,” said De La Hoya. “He’s creating attention that boxing hasn’t seen in a long time.”
Jake's older brother, Logan Paul, will have a high-profile pay-per-view headliner of his own, when he faces Floyd Mayweather in an exhibition on February 20.
De La Hoya, 47-years-old, is also interested in returning to the ring.
The 'Golden Boy' retired from the sport after suffering a one-sided stoppage loss at the hands of Manny Pacquiao in 2008.
For the last 12 years, he's been fully focused on promoting.
But, he admits the recent performance by Tyson has further inspired him to seriously consider a return.
“Mike Tyson proved and showed the world that age is just a number,” said De La Hoya to Sky. “I miss it, I love boxing.”
