On January 18th, Star Boxing’s Danny ‘El Gallo’ Gonzalez (17-1-1, 7 KO) looks to make a splash in the hot super lightweight division by taking on former world champion, Chris Algieri (22-3, 8 KO) as part of Matchroom Boxing’s New York debut at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theatre live on DAZN.

Gonzalez, is aiming to upset the apple cart by taking out the come-backing former champ, Algieri, who he served as a long time sparring partner for.

While the focus on this matchup has been whether or not Chris Algieri can return to title contention, Danny Gonzalez has dreamed of the chance to fight for a title since he first started training under the tutelage of head coach, Moises Roman Jr. as an overweight teen over 10 years ago. Since then he’s amassed a near perfect record and feels he’s been overlooked by the boxing world.

“A win over Algieri will most definitely put me in the spotlight, and hopefully turn me from a prospect to a contender while showing my friends and family how dedicated I’ve been to the sport. I believe in myself and I know I haven’t shown my full potential yet in the ring. I guarantee the best version of myself will show up January 18th and I will shock the world.”

Gonzalez, who is of Puerto Rican descent and is based out of Woodhaven, New York has made several adjustments to his camp in preparation for the biggest fight of his young career.

“My training has been aggressive and focused like always but for this camp we brought in Felipe Gomez to sharpen up my movement and help with cutting off the ring, while still focusing on my defense. I’m more open minded and I’m setting a vey specific strategy and game plan for Algieri.”

Having shared camps together and formed a friendship, ‘El Gallo’ plans on putting his personal relationship with Algieri on hold in pursuit of his goal.

“Friends or not, the fans can expect an extremely entertaining fight from start to finish. I’m coming to bring an all out war to Chris. He’s an obstacle in my way and I’m coming to break him down and show him he can’t compete with a hungrier, younger Rooster like me. He was my idol but now he’s my rival and I will not be denied victory.”
