Earlier tonight at the Manhattan Center in New York City, the year of big upsets continued as undefeated super-middleweight Curtis "Showtime" Stevens (13-1, 11KOs) was stopped by journeyman Marcos Primera (20-15-2, 13KOs) in the eighth round.
Stevens was well ahead on the scorecards and easily winning the fight as the two fighters entered the ring for the eighth round, when a shocked crowd of observers gasped as Primera sent to Stevens down to the canvas from a perfectly executed shot.
Stevens was able to beat the count, but appeared to be on unsteady legs as Primera attacked like a fighter going for broke and the ref jumped in to stop the fight in order to save Stevens from further damage.
Primera had fought a number of big names in the past, such as Jermain Taylor, Kofi Jantuah, Robert Frazier, Luis Collazo and Joshua Clottey - losing to all of them. But, he also played the role of the spoiler on one other occassion when he stopped undefeated 12-0 prospect Carlos De Leon, Jr. in 2005.
