Former two division world champion Jhonny Gonzalez (60-10, 50 KOs) may have a fight on his hands this coming Saturday night, when he faces Christopher Martin (29-7-3, 9 KOs) in a ten round encounter at the Deportivo Agustin Ramos Millan, in Toluca, Mexico.
Martin's day job is as a prison officer in California. Chris says he's had seven weeks of intense training and is well prepared for their fight.
Jhonny who's seeking a third world title in a third weight category, this time at super featherweight said Chris's high handed defense is a challenge to pierce, and he must not waste time in cutting down the distance, in order to go to work....and promised to take no prisoners.
Jhonny's ultimate aim is to fight for the green and gold World Boxing Council super featherweight title. And at it's weekly press conference he was sitting beside the champ Francisco Vargas, who also happens to be a good friend.
Jhonny said he would relish a chance for competition, unfortunately not friendly for its duration, but it's arrangement is a question for the negotiation abilities of opposing promoters.
For his part, Martin has promised to close the show by knocking Gonzalez out.
"I am in the best shape of my career. I am now a fighter with more experience, hungrier and will not be an easy night for Jhonny Gonzalez, but I'm going to knock him out because the one who lets his opponent off the hook will lose and I will not let him off the hook if I'm on the verge of a knockout, so I dare say that Jhonny will not reach a decision," Martin concluded.
