For 22 year old unbeaten super welterweight prospect Ted Cheeseman (12-0, 8KOs), a fight with rugged veteran Carson Jones could be a case of “too much, too soon” for the Bermondsey native. The two are scheduled to collide on February 2 on the “British Beef” co-feature at The 02 Arena in London.
Cheeseman ventures out of the domestic level to face an opponent with world level experience from the United States - and Jones is no stranger to English soil.
In six past U.K. bout appearances, Jones (40-12-3, 30 KOs) has made the local fans either get high anxiety with close calls or sent them home in massive disappointment for their hometown fighter.
'The Big Cheese' insists that age is nothing but a number and he will show the world he is ready to be world rated on the 2nd of February.
“A lot of people know in England that I’m a proper athlete. I train every day, eat, sleep and drink boxing. I diet well, do my strength and conditioning, my running, my boxing, everything is down to a T," Cheeseman said.
“As long as I turn up, concentrate and work to the plan, this is going to be a comfortable fight for me."
Jones’ last Great Britain appearance was in November of 2016, where he stopped previously unbeaten prospect Ben Hall in six rounds. Jones would lose a highly controversial technical decision to former world champion Antonio Margarito last September.
Cheeseman assures his preparation will be top notch going into this bout, which is the most difficult of his career on paper. Victory is the only thing on his mind when facing Jones.
“It could be really easy or it could be really hard. It depends on what Carson Jones turns up,“ Cheeseman said.
“He’s 31. He’s getting older. You never know what he’s got left. If a good Carson Jones shows up, it could go all the way. In my honest opinion, in my head I feel like I’ll get him out of there in the later rounds.
“The first few rounds I’ll be winning them by breaking him down and after all the punishment, there won’t be much left. I’ll stop him in the later rounds."
