Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (50-2-1, 32 KOs) has responded back to Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs), who in a recent televised interview explained why there was legitimate dislike between them.
The two Mexican superstars are scheduled to collide on Cinco De Mayo weekend, May 6th.
Their bout, which takes place at the catch-weight of 164.5-pounds, will headline an HBO Pay-Per-View card at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
To make this fight happen, Canelo agreed to come up from the junior middleweight limit of 154-pounds, and Chavez Jr. is dropping down from the super middleweight max of 168-pounds.
During the recent interview, Canelo explained that he doesn't like Chavez Jr., because his countryman is always making negative comments behind his back.
"[Our rivalry exists] because of the many things that he says. There are so many things that he says, they are stupid, they are stupid things, and he never tells you these things when he's in front of you. When he is in front of you he doesn't say anything to you. But right now he's my opponent and this is what bothers me," said Canelo to Box Azteca.
Chavez Jr. believes Canelo deserves every bit of criticism that he's receiving. In the last few weeks, Chavez Jr. took aim at Canelo over his continued delay in facing middleweight king Gennady Golovkin - which is arguably the biggest fight to be made in boxing. Last year Golovkin was the mandatory challenger to Canelo's WBC middleweight belt, but the fight never happened after Canelo vacated the title and dropped back to 154 to capture the WBO title.
Chavez Jr. claims Canelo "ran" from the Golovkin fight. For his part, Chavez promised - if he wins next month - to fight Golovkin in the fall.
"Whoever gets angry about the criticism, recognizes that he deserved it Canelo," Chavez Jr. stated.
