6/1/13 KO 2 LUIS HERNANDEZ -- Cruised past older (39 years old) inactive (fifth fight since 2006) veteran who had lost three of four, two by KO. Out-landed Hernandez 37-16 (total) and 30-5 (jabs) but Hernandez's furious but infrequent spurts enabled him to out-land Charlo 11-7 in power shots. However, Charlo scored two knockdowns in round two, the first a but-for-the-ropes knockdown with a hook, the second with a shotgun jab in the middle of a combination. Hernandez arose but the fight was stopped.

The jab was the dominant weapon again, for it make up 76.7% of Charlo's attempts (69 of 90) and 81.1% of his connects (30 of 37). 

4/20/13 KO 5 ORLANDO LORA -- Exploited Lora's extreme toughness and sieve-like defense as he landed 50% of his total punches, 39% of his jabs and 60% of his power shots, out-landing Lora (28-4-2, 1-2-1 in last four) 140-47 (total), 54-10 (jabs) and 86-37 (power) en route to a corner retirement between rounds four and five. Offense was almost perfectly balanced -- 139 jabs and 143 power punches -- and defense was superb (15% overall, 10% jab, 18% power).

Averaging 84.2 punches per round (31 percent above the 58.4 welterweight average), Cruz was 230 of 505 (46%) overall to Fernandez's 99 of 428 (23%), led in jabs (51 of 143, 36% to 9 of 137, 7%) and power shots (179 of 362, 49% to 90 of 291, 31%). Cruz was effective to the body as he led 71-38 in connects.

3/2/13 KO 3 GILBERT VENEGAS -- One-way traffic against a 35-year-old in Venegas (2-4-1 in last seven) who scored a KO over a 4-0 fighter one week earlier. Charlo's six-inch height advantage and two-and-a-half inch reach edge were pivotal as he kept Venegas outside with a busy jab and blasted him to the canvas with an overhand right to the ear. Venegas thought better and rose at the count of 10-and-a-half.

Charlo's jab was the main punch, comprising 70.7% of his total offense (145 of 205) but only 54.7% of his total connects (35 of 64). Out-landed Venegas 64-5 (total), 35-2 (jabs) and 29-3 (power), landing 31% overall and 48% power. Averaged 58.7 jabs per round and 14.2 connects, far above the 24.6 and 5.3 junior middleweight averages.

2/1/13 W 10 JOSE LUIS CASTILLO -- In a good action fight that was staged mostly in the trenches, Smith's slightly superior volume (70.5 per round to 68.8), connect total (279-251), a point penalty against the 38-year-old Castillo (64-11-1, won four of last six) for low blows in round four and the fact that Smith led 6-3-1 (in rounds) in total connects per round led to a convincing decision victory (100-90, 99-91, 98-92). Landed 40% of total punches, 28% of jabs and 45% of power shots and prevailed 218-188 in power connects. Absorbed a fair amount too (36% overall, 34% jabs, 37% power).

9/21/12 W 10 (spl.) RONALD CRUZ -- Cruz (17-0) loses narrow decision (96-94 2X S, 96-94 C) in his adopted hometown of Bethlehem, Pa. despite dominating the stats. He out-landed Smith 253-186 (overall) and 207-126 (power) plus landed 50% of his power shots to Smith's 34%. Smith landed more jabs (60-46) but Cruz was more accurate (22%-20%). Power shots made up 66.1% of Cruz's total offense to 55.9% of Smith's, denoting Cruz was the more aggressive fighter in terms of punch selection. Not a robbery, but it definitely bucked the historical trend of CompuBox connect leaders lining up with the judges.

3/23/12  L 10 ROBERTO GARCIA (these guys threw down!  Smith landed an avg. of 26 of 69 punches per rpound (37%) to 27 of 101 (27%-1005 total punches) for the 30-3 Garcia.  20 of Smith’s 26 landed punches per round were power shots (41%). Scoring: 98-92 G; 97-93 G 2x.  Garcia lost a ten round decision to the then come backing Antonio Margarito on 5/8/10)

8/12/11  L 10  KERMIT CINTRON (Cintron's frenetic work rate enabled him to grab an early lead. But beginning in the fourth round Smith picked up his pace and slugged toe-to-toe with the thought-to-be stronger one-punch hitter. Cintron's punches didn't have the snap or power of Smith, but his steadier work (113 punches thrown per round, 54 of which were jabs) enabled him to win the decision. Smith landed an avg. of 28 of 70 punches per round (40%)  25 of Smith’s 28 landed punches per round were power shots.    Scoring: 98-91 C; 96-94 C; 97-93 C.)

7/9/10  KO by 9  LANARDO TYNER (Good news: Smith landed an avg. of 27 of 66 punches per round (41%) and landed 40% of his power shots, 21 per round.  Bad News: Tyner, then 23-3, landed 30 of 85 punches per round (36%) and 44% of his power shots.  Scoring thru 8: 78-74 T 2x & 77-76 S.)
