Bruce Carrington is no longer a prospect, but a contender.
Carrington had a spectacular knockout win over Bernard Torres in February in New York, and is looking to be a future star on ESPN and for his promoters Top Rank.
“It is more ring experience and it is just going to come with time,” the featherweight told ESPN.
Carrington, 26, is a stand-out amateur.. He should’ve fought in the 2020 Olympics, but the Covid pandemic disrupted his plans, and he then proved unable to qualify. Duke Ragan would instead travel to Tokyo and win an Olympic silver medal. Carrington holds a record of 11-0, 7 KOs. Most would consider that the record of a prospect.
His most recent wins were over Torres and Jason Sanchez, both of whom are respected for their toughness. He is also ranked sixth in the rankings of the WBO. Despite having so relatively few fights, Carrington appears to be close to challenging a world title.
“It would be – to be honest – any of the champions,” he said when asked who he’d like to fight for a world title.
Carrington trains with Kay Koroma at the DLX Boxing Gym in Las Vegas, Nevada. He has sparred with Luis Alberto Lopez. They are therefore “familiar” with each other.
“I am most familiar with ‘Venado’ Lopez,” Carrington said.
Lopez made the third defense of his IBF featherweight title against Reiya Abe on Saturday night, when he stopped the Japanese contender in the eighth round.
