2015 was a banner year for Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (46-1-1, 32KOs). He had a sensational knockout of James Kirkland in the month of May and then came back in November to capture the WBC middleweight championship with a twelve round unanimous decision over Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico.

The pay-per-view with Cotto generated 900,000 pay-per-view buys - which is the highest figure in the last few years for a boxing PPV not involving Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao as part of the headliner.

"I am very happy. I do not base this achievement on just a single fight, I think [I've always given my best] throughout my career, all the sacrifice I've been doing. [Cotto] was a fight that was very important; that put me in boxing history," Canelo said.

Canelo is set to return on May 7th as part of Cinco De Mayo weekend. If he wins, he will have to make a mandatory defense in the fall against Gennady "GGG" Golovkin.

"I've always said I'm a fighter and I fight with anyone. If I have to fight him [Golovkin] on that day, I'm ready to do it. For me, Gennady is a great fighter, he is a strong fighter with plenty of power," Canelo said. "I worry about providing good fights. We will look for an opponent to give a good fight to the public [in May]"

There were rumblings last year of a catch-weight bout with Manny Pacquiao, who in 2010 went up to 150 to capture the WBC 154-pound title with a win over Antonio Margarito. Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank initially had some interest in the fight, although he later admitted Canelo would be far too big for the eight division champion.

Pacquiao is set to retire following April's trilogy with Timothy Bradley, but if he wants to continue his career and wants to step up - Canelo is ready.

"He is about to retire, but it would be an honor to have a fight with him. So far, there has been nothing [discussed with us about this fight]," Canelo said.

After his win over Cotto, the Puerto Rican star and his trainer, Freddie Roach, claimed they were robbed by the judges. Canelo has a few other items on his plate, but he would be willing to entertain a rematch in the future.

"There was no rematch clause," Canelo said. "If he wants [a rematch], we can give him one - but I think right now there are other things looming. It was a great fight [with Cotto] and I'm sure it would be another great fight."
