After two and a half years out of the ring, Jermall Charlo believed he was both mentally and physically ready to make his return. However, with a considerable amount of ring rust building on his game, Charlo was given a relatively soft touch to ease his way back into the mix. (photo by Ryan Hafey)
Jose Benavidez Jr., who started his career at 140 pounds, did his best to score the upset. But, with Charlo being the naturally bigger and stronger man, he cruised his way to a unanimous decision victory.
By all accounts, Charlo (33-0, 22 KOs) was pleased with his performance. Now, he’s looking ahead. With the pugnacious Houston native hoping to land bigger fights, Caleb Plant is currently waiting by the phone expecting a call.
As Plant continues to play the waiting game, he reflected on Charlo’s outing. While most have given the 33-year-old praise, Plant doesn't believe that the superlatives are warranted.
“It wasn’t nothing spectacular,” said Plant during an interview with Fight Hub TV. “He's in there against a smaller guy. It’s not like I was super impressed.”
Just a few months ago, both Charlo and Plant got into a backstage altercation. Although the details are a bit murky, numerous videos captured Plant smacking Charlo across the face.
Since their issues, Plant (22-2, 13 KOs) has made it clear that he wants to share the ring with Charlo next. According to the former IBF super middleweight champ, a win over Charlo would be more than enough for him to land a rematch with David Benavidez.
Unsurprisingly, Plant isn’t a fan of Charlo. He considers him disingenuous and an overall phony individual. Be that as it may, Plant admits that he was rooting for Charlo to get back in the win column. Now that he has, he believes there shouldn’t be anything standing in the way of their showdown.
“I’m glad he won. That’s who I wanted to win so we can make the fight happen.”
