Emirates Arena, Glasgow, Scotland - Ricky Burns (36-2, 11KOs) got a shocking TKO win over undefeated mandatory challenger Jose Gonzalez (22-1, 17KOs) to retain the WBO lightweight crown in ten rounds. Gonzalez appeared to get the better of Burns for most of the fight, but punched himself out after trying to finish off the hurt champion in the seventh, and then it was downhill from there as the Puerto Rican boxer had spent all of his energy.
The boxers started jabbing in the first round. Burns was letting hands go near the end, but getting countered by Gonzalez's hard shots. Burns continued to miss many of his shots in the early rounds, but Gonzalez was able to counter to the head and body without few problems. Gonzalez's jab was finding the mark and he picking off Burns' returns. Burns started trading punches with Gonzalez in the fourth, landing a few and taking some hard shots back. Gonzalez let his hands go in the fifth, drilling the body of Burns with hard punches.
In the seventh, they went to war after Gonzalez rocked Burns and tried to finish him off against the ropes. Burns stayed up and was trading big punches landing a few to push Gonzalez back. Gonzalez continued to press and he was unloading on the head and body of Burns. Gonzalez, who seemed to be tired from the previous round, took off in the eight. Gonzalez still appeared to be tired in the ninth and wasn't throwing as many punches as Burns began to take over.
Gonzalez, who looked very tired, would not come out for the tenth round and Burns was given the TKO win.
In a battle for the vacant WBC International silver super featherweight title, John Simpson (25-9, 11KOs) went to war and was able to hang on during very tough and physical moments to overcome 41-year-old rugged veteran Choi Tseveenpurev (36-7, 24KOs) with a twelve round unanimous decision. The scores were 116-112, 117-112 and 116-113.
Stephen Simmons (8-0, 4KOs) picked up a third round stoppage win over Michael Sweeney (12-3-1, 6KOs) to capture the vacant British Celtic cruiserweight title.
Lightweight prospect Michael Roberts (12-0, 1KO) secured a six round decision over Mariusz Bak (2-). The sole score was 58-57.
Super middleweight contender David Brophy (7-0-1) won a six round decision over Gary Boulden (7-8-2). The sole score was 58-57.
Light heavyweight contender Rocky Fielding (14-0, 8KOs) stopped Michal Nieroda (11-4, 6KOs) in the first round of their scheduled eight.
