It seemed incredibly unlikely, a pipe dream, wishful thinking, and simply a waste of time to even talk about. Both Devin Haney and Terence Crawford have always been friendly with one another. Also, and more importantly, they competed in vastly different weight classes.
Playing the role of a make-believe matchmaker made little to no sense. However, following Haney’s easier-than-expected win over Regis Prograis at 140 pounds, Bill Haney, Devin’s father and trainer, revealed that a matchup between his son and Crawford isn’t completely farfetched.
At this point, Brian “Bomac” McIntyre isn’t a fan of the nonstop talking surrounding Haney possibly taking on his pound-for-pound star. Although he reveres Haney and believes he’s incredibly talented, in a showdown with Crawford, he’s completely convinced that his bright future will take an irreversible hit.
“He would ruin that boy’s career,” said Bomac on ThaBoxingVoice. “He’ll ruin his career, trust me.”
Since he was an adolescent, Bomac watched Crawford and played a gigantic role in his development. Earlier this year, all of the work they put together hit a crescendo.
Errol Spence Jr., a former pound-for-pound luminary who held a stranglehold on the welterweight division, was violently beaten and stopped at the hands of Crawford. Still, despite looking nearly unbeatable, the Omaha, Nebraska, native is 36 years of age. Haney, on the other hand, is 11 years younger than him and is presumably creeping closer to his prime.
To a certain extent, Bomac can understand why a young lion like Haney would be licking his chops at the thought of knocking off the veteran lion. He might still have some fight in him, but the grays on his chin are noticeable and age will always be on Haney’s side.
If he wants, Haney can come test that theory for himself. But if he does, Bomac has a feeling that the end result will be his worst nightmare.
“Most fighters at that age, they start declining. He gets better and better each fight. He takes care of himself, he’s a student of the game. They better quit f------ with Bud.”
