As reported on BoxingScene previously reported, Denton Vassell's showdown with Birmingham's Frankie Gavin has been switched from Wembley Arena to Liverpool's Olympia venue.   The Commonwealth and British welterweight title fight was originally due to take place on June 15 at Wembley only to be moved to July 20 earlier this week.  Now, though, the "Battle of the undefeated" will take place on June 28, which is music to the ears of Bob Shannon, who trains the 20-0 (10) Vassell.

“This is great news for us as it means that Denton [who lives in Manchester] has practically got home support," said Shannon when speaking to BoxingScene.  "I love Liverpool, its people and fighters are very close to my heart.  Dates and venues do change in boxing, you just have to knuckle down and keep to what you're doing.  Denton's going to fight in front of local fans, he'll even be able to sleep in his own bed the night before the fight — he can't wait to go out there and fight Frankie.”

He added: “We're a very happy camp.  We have been since Frank Warren announced this fight, and we haven't thought about any of the changes.  We just work on keeping Denton fit and focused, and he is in great spirits because he knows he has the winning of this fight.

“If anything, this puts a bit of pressure on Frankie because he's coming into the bear pit and they'll be a lot of support for Denton, although I'm sure Frankie's fans will also raise the roof.  Today's news is an extra bonus for Denton and me.  We're delighted with it.  The change of date makes no difference as Denton's been in fighting shape since the turn of the year in anticipation of this fight.”
