The former world champion in two divisions and current number 7 in the WBA's world rankings at bantamweight, Omar "Huracán" Narváez (49-4-2, 25 KO), was shockingly defeated at home for the first time, by journeyman fighter Pablo Ariel "Pablito" Gomez (12-10-2, 1 KO).
Gómez surprised many with his performance in the most important fight of his career and boxed past the veteran to secure a ten round split decision victory. The scores were 97-93 for Gomez, 96-94 for Narvaez, and 96-94 for Gomez.
After an irregular start in professional game, alternating defeats and victories, as of 2017 his career took a remarkable turn to rack up 8 victories in a row, managing to capture the South American featherweight title after dethroning and taking the undefeated record from Juan Carlos Sardinez.
Narvaez, at 44-years-old, is at the end of the road.
His prior defeats were at the hands of top fighters like Nonito Donaire, Zolani Tete and Naoya Inoue, And he had never been defeated at home.
IN OTHER RESULTS: The former featherweight champion of the International Boxing Federation (IBF), Australian veteran fighter Billy "The Kid" Dib returned to the ring, and looked sharp in defeating Vietnamese boxer Van Thao Tran by way of a broad unanimous decision, this Saturday in the main event of a card that was organized at the Entertainment Center, Hurstville, Australia.
Dib controlled the action in the first two rounds, but in the third Tran reacted and dominated the round. However, Dib's dominance returned in the fourth, and remained that way until he achieved a lopsided decision win with scores of 99-91, 99-91 and 98-92 on the three cards of the judges.
With this victory, Dib improved his record to 46-6, with 26 knockouts, while Tran fell to 12-1, with 8 knockouts. In his previous bout, Dib was knocked out in four rounds by Englishman Amir Khan, on a card that was held in Saudi Arabia.
